1945 ~ 2012
John Mannos was a one-of-a-kind, bigger than life Greek God.
John was born January 6, 1945 to Greek parents Tom J. Mannos and Anastasia Xidas. He grew up near the U. of U. and worked for his father's tile company Thompson (Tom and Sons) Tile, where he and his four brothers learned a strong work ethic. Besides a tile setter, John was a restaurateur, a fisherman and boater, an airplane pilot, a world traveler, a collector (all those waffle irons), and a man of many projects, and the best cook we know. With great entrepreneurial spirit, John and his wife Marghie opened General Army Navy Surplus on Redwood Road in 1980. The store continues to be a Salt Lake landmark.
John loved Point Loma, California and spent his last two years there. He was strong beyond measure but the bladder cancer was stronger. Always get a second opinion!!!
John was pre-deceased by his parents and three brothers, Tom, Sam and Nick. He leaves behind his broken-hearted wife of 33 years, Marghie Bowman Mannos, his sweet daughter, friend and caregiver, Kristen Jensen; daughter Jan and sons Tyler and Bryan, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his employees and dear friends whom he always considered to be part of his family. He would like to thank all those who helped him through this difficult past year. You know who you are and he loved you all.
A Life Celebration will be held for John on Sunday, October 7th, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., Olympian Restaurant, 2181 So. 700 E., Salt Lake City, Utah 84106. Donations may be made in John's name to: Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network at www.bcan.org.
