John O. Montoya, Utah's first Peace Corps Volunteer, passed away April 14, 2014, at his home in Tooele, Utah.
John was born September 30, 1941, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Upon his return from the Peace Corps in 1963, he was in federal service for 35 years with the Departments of Army and Air Force. John was a world traveler, and lived and worked in the United States, Spain and Okinawa. After his retirement from Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas, he moved with his family to Tooele in 2007. John was proud to serve our country as an Air Force reservist for 36 years, retiring as an Air Force colonel, and received many decorations throughout his career.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nellie (Pacheco) Montoya. He is survived by his wife of over 47 years, Evelyn (Medina) Montoya, son John H. Montoya, sister Laurell (Manuel) Martinez, brother Jerry (Theresa) Montoya.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 22 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at St. Marguerite's Catholic Church in Tooele. Funeral mass is Wednesday, April 23 at 11:00am at St. Marguerite's Catholic Church. His remains will be cremated for interment with military honors at the Tooele City Cemetery.
