Joseph Reed Tavey Obituary
Joseph Reed Tavey
"Grandpa Joe"
Joe died Thursday April 4, 2013 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born October 3, 1949 to Beulah and Reed Tavey. He grew up in Murray, UT and attended Judge Memorial High School. He served in the Army for two years and was proud to be a Vietnam vet. He married Janet Smith and moved to West Jordan where he lived for 30 years before making the move to Eagle Mountain in 2010. He was a skilled gas and diesel mechanic who worked for Kennecott and then Magna Water for 20+ years before retiring in 2007.
He was an avid Chevy fan and spent a number of years running his racecar "Agent Orange", a 1973 Nova that he had restored. He also ran the Race-a-Cop program for several years. When he stopped racing, he enjoyed watching his son, Mike race. Most recently he enjoyed taking rides with his family in the Ranger, which he had dubbed the "buggy".
Joe had a wonderful sense of humor that he retained until the very end. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for his family. He was a dedicated father and grandfather and enjoyed spoiling his Grandson, Joey who he helped raise.
He is survived by his wife Janet Smith (Eagle Mountain); daughter Jill Tavey (Murray); son Mike Tavey (Eagle Mountain); grandson Joey Tavey; and his adopted grandchildren: Anthony, Kourtney and Mackenzie. He was preceded in death by his son Tom Tavey.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8th, at 10 am, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1441 Tamarack Road, Taylorsville, Utah. A viewing will be held Sunday, April 7th, at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah, from 5-7 pm. Interment will be at Utah Veteran's Memorial Park.
