Kathryn Umbreit Obituary

1950 ~ 2014
Kathryn Christensen Umbreit, at the age of 63, returned to her Heavenly Father on January 15, 2014. She passed away surrounded by her friends and family, having been stricken with Pancreatic Cancer, diagnosed a mere 4 months earlier.
Kathy was born in Brigham City, Utah, to Dayton Velroy and Marjorie Carter Christensen on November 17, 1950. After graduating from Box Elder High, Kathy went to BYU and Weber State where she studied to become a caring Respiratory Therapist. After 30 years of service, she retired from Alta View Hospital in 2012. At the age of 27 she was chased down and asked out by her soon-to-be husband, Douglas R. Umbreit. They were sealed for time and all eternity on August 24, 1978, in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They enjoyed a happy marriage for 33 Years before he passed away, though they are now reunited on the next part of their journey.
Kathy had many hobbies but her true passion lay with her family, her friends and the gospel. Her love knew no bounds, and there was little time when she wasn't serving those lucky enough to know her. As a member of the LDS church Kathy had many callings, but her favorite calling was her last, which was as a Temple Coordinator at the Draper LDS temple. Despite her declining health, she continued to serve in the Church until she was no longer able. During the final chapter in her life it was her two beautiful granddaughters that brought her the most joy and kept her strong until her final days. She loved and was loved by all who knew her.
Kathy is survived by her son Matthew D. Umbreit, her daughter Melissa U. Meru, her son-in-law Michael C. Meru, granddaughters Elle and Emme Meru, and brothers Dick (Sharon) and Scott (Diane) Christensen.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center located at 1911 East 14110 South Draper, Utah 84020.
A viewing will be 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. at the Church.
Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Brigham City Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com.

I worked with Kathy in the Draper temple. She was an ordinance worker and I worked in the office. Everything seemed brighter when she was around. I lost my husband 17 months ago to cancer and she both consoled and encouraged me along the path to healing from that tragedy. There will always be a special part in my heart for her and I deem it a privilege to have known her.

Kathy was my friend, and my visiting teacher for several years! One month she had cute Melissa check on me while she was out of the country. I love her with all my heart.

Melissa, I honestly do feel your pain and it seems unfair that you and especially the girls had so little time with your Mom. You were so lucky to have her all these years and to be so close and spend quality time together. I know you will always treasure those memories.
It was a privilege to know Kathy briefly and know what a wonderful Mom and support she was for you. Please know that we love you so much and will keep you close to our hearts and in our prayers.

Melissa, I am so sad to hear about your Mom's passing. I just loved working with her on the Las Scelles booster club. She was organized, funny, friendly and such a kick to be around! She and your dad (remembered by me affectionately as Dove) were awesome. May your days be filled with lovely memories of her and what a cool person she was.

Kathy and Doug were the best neighbors you could ever ask for. Thing I remember most about both were the many trips they took around the world, it was fun to hear about their adventures.
