Lovinia Greene Harmsen
"Wonderful"
1917 ~ 2018
Salt Lake City, UT-Lovinia's well-lived 101 years were forever punctuated with the word "wonderful." It was her go-to response to just about everything. She absolutely loved life and thought it was wonderful!
Our sweet mother was born November 5, 1917 in Logan, Utah to Mark Hindley Greene and Alice Dunford Greene. She often commented what a happy childhood she had known. From elementary school to her days as a Delta Gamma at the University of Utah, she was characteristically happy. She graduated with a masters degree in elementary education. Having found a career truly made for her, she enthusiastically taught in seven Salt Lake City elementary schools and one school in Wailuku, Hawaii. She retired after 27 years of teaching.
Following her college graduation she married, but when the marriage dissolved, she reared alone her baby, Randy, and small son, Stephen. She met her challenges head-on with her usual optimism, lack of fear, faith, and hard work. She enjoyed devoting most of her time making memories with her boys. She also enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing, and as a senior, volunteering in the schools. She was also a lifelong supporter of the arts. Spending little on herself, she nevertheless was generous with others as she helped many realize their goals and dreams.
Throughout her life she stayed close with her Greene, Dunford, Harmsen, and Draper relatives. She had a great appreciation for her family's deep spiritual and historical roots. Children loved Lovinia, both in the classroom and out, and she adored them. She was a most incredible grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. At family gatherings she always left the adult crowd in favor of the children asking her to play with them. She was never more beautiful than as a grandma. She tended her grandchildren every Thursday for the whole day and filled those days with teaching and playing. She was always an eager listener, anxious to hear what they had to say.
Lovinia was known for freely sharing her testimony of the . Her life was spent serving in church callings and especially enjoyed her years serving a day each week on Temple Square. Her life epitomized "the gospel is beautifully simple and simply beautiful."
She was so proud of her two sons and dearly loved her daughters-in-law. She relished rearing them in a lifetime of enriching activities. Until her death, she especially loved laughing and talking together around the kitchen table.
Lovinia will be desperately missed, but we remain filled with happiness and gratitude for her life. She is survived by her sons Steve (Kelly) and Randy (Sharon) and numerous posterity.
We wish to express a most heartfelt thank you to Mayumi Anderson and Sela Fatongiatau for their professional and loving care to our mother this last year. Happily, in her beloved home of 60 years on Laird Avenue, she was able to live out her life.
