89 Years Old|
Lucia Portillo Baldera, passed on March 21, 2102, with hope of a joyful reunion with her husband, Reuben.
Lucia was born in El Paso, Texas to Jesus Felipe Portillo and Guadalupe Loya. She was raised in El Paso and it was there where she met the love of her life, Reuben Balderas. She and Reuben eloped and were married at a young age. Shortly thereafter, Reuben found himself in Europe and North Africa, a soldier in the US Army, deeply entrenched in World War II.
Upon Reuben's return from the war, they relocated to Southern California where Reuben completed his college education, began his career, and together they raised their family of one daughter, Lucy, and three sons, Tom, George and Reed.
Lucia was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings throughout her life. Her greatest calling turned out to be giving service and care to many members of her family, beginning with her son, Tom, who was born with cancer and survived to young adulthood because of her care.
Lucia is preceded in death by her husband, Reuben; son Tom; parents, Jesus and Guadelupe Portillo; brothers, Antonio and Jesus; and sisters, Elena Navarro and Esther Carreon.
Survived by daughter, Lucy (Joel) Rose, Bountiful, Utah; sons, George (Maria) Balderas, El Paso, Texas, and Reed (Twila) Balderas, Santee, California; sister Beatriz Madrid, San Antonio, Texas; ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff of Heritage Place Assisted Living, Bountiful, Utah and hospice care staff for their tender care of our mother during her final months in mortality.
A graveside service was held at All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach, California, where Lucia was interred next to Reuben, her husband of 67 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the
