LYNN HANSEN Obituary

Lynn Wayne Hansen 1922 ~ 2009 Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand-father, Lynn Wayne Hansen, returned to his Heavenly Father's arms on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the age of 87. Lynn was born on October 11, 1922 to William Alma and Imelda Christiana Miller Hansen in Monroe, Utah. He graduated from South Sevier High School in 1941. He was drafted into the United States Army December 1942. He was part of the much-decorated 84th Infantry Division known as the "Rail Splitters." He served honorably and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in active duty in Germany. He was discharged in 1945 and, after recovering from his injuries, enrolled at Brigham Young University where he earned both a Bachelor's Degree (1951) and a Master's Degree (1958). Lynn married his sweetheart, Portia Puckett Hiatt, on July 26, 1951 in the Manti Temple where they were sealed for time and all eternity. Together they raised eight children. He retired in 1990 after 38 years as a principal and classroom teacher, first in Idaho and then in Davis County Schools. Mr. Hansen touched the lives of thousands of students during his career. Lynn was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings over the years, including as an Ordinance Worker with his wife at the Bountiful Temple and serving three Stake Missions. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Portia, and their eight children: David (Cindy) Hansen of Orem, Lynne (Michael) Goodwin of North Ogden, Richard (Leah) Hansen of San Jose, California, Alan Hansen, Kae Hansen, Adele Hansen, Holly Hansen, and Russell Hansen of Bountiful. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Laura (Joe) Farnsworth of St. George, Bradley (Michelle) Hansen of Heber, Jason Hansen of Pleasant Grove, Kathryn (Jared) Reimschussel of American Fork, Jared (Jessie) Hansen of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Robert Goodwin of North Ogden, and Lynn Jay Hansen of San Jose, and by five great- grandchildren: Spencer, James, and Grace, and Aaliyah and Jordan. Lynn's grandson Jared is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan. A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 295 North Main in Bountiful from 6:00 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bountiful Utah Ninth Ward Chapel at 585 East Center Street in Bountiful, with a viewing from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Lynn's name to LDS Church Perpetual Education fund or to the nonprofit Treehouse Children's Museum at 347 22nd Street, Ogden, Utah 84401.

Dear Hansen Family,
I had Mr. Hansen for my my sixth grade teacher at Adelaide Elem. in Bountiful. I remember being so nervous when I found out that I got him for a teacher since he was new to the school that year and I had never had a male teacher. He turned out to be my very favorite teacher of all time and I still have such good memories of him.
My thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.

Uncle Lynn was one of the nicest men I knew growing up. When I run into people and they realize Lynn Hansen is my uncle, I hear all these good things about what a wonderful teacher, man, friend he was,and many more good things. Lynn was certainly a good example to very many people. Portia my prayers are with you and your children that the Lord will comfort you.

It's hard to believe it's been over 50 years since Mr. Hansen was my history teacher in Thomas, Idaho. We were also in the Thomas Ward together for several years. It's been a treat to run into both of you through the years here in Bountiful and at Adelaide when he was teaching there. He was a good teacher and a good man. I looked up to him. May the Lord bless you with peace and comfort.

I am proud of the fact I carry Uncle Lynn's name as my middle name and I cherished it enough that I passed that name on to my daughter. He will always be cherished by us. I will never forget the faith inspiring story he told of his receiving a priesthood blessing while lying wounded on the street in Wurms, Germany. Our love to your family. Gary Lynn and Patti Hansen
