Marie Giovengo Obituary

Marie P. Giovengo "Aunt Marie" Marie Giovengo, age 85, passed away July 20, 2009. Born March 18, 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Matt and Mildred Pretl. The family moved to Buhl, Idaho when Marie was seven years old. She graduated from Buhl High School in 1941 and then moved to Salt Lake City. She worked in a boarding house for room and board while attending Stevens-Henagar College of Business. Marie worked for American Savings as a secretary, retiring after 31 years of service. Marie truly enjoyed the people she worked with and enjoyed the lunches that they were able to attend together after her retirement. She always took interest in people, families and events with the most incredible recall of names, dates and details. She enjoyed the family reunions with her cousins and helping her mother make Kolache, fried chicken and homemade noodles. Other fond memories include treating family and friends to dinner at Francisco's, garlic bread and pizzas, honey baked hams, BBQ ribs, and special chocolate rum torte birthday cakes. Marie married the love of her life, Samuel Giovengo, November 6, 1949, in Buhl, Idaho. Sam passed away October 1, 1984. Survived by her brothers, Joe Pretl (Shirley) of Castleford, Idaho; Leonard Pretl (Sally) of Huntington Beach, California; nieces, Sherry, Karen, Rene, Jill and Venice; nephews, Rick, Vernon, Matt, Russell, Richard, Robert, Ray, T.J., Gary, Roger and Duane; and sister-in-law Louise Miles of Salt Lake City. Also survived by Robert, Nancy, Robby, Sherry, Jack, Shauntae, Jessica, Sam and Sebastian Defa, whom she treated as her own family, becoming mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to all. She had an extra special bond with Robby and Jack and took great pride in their every achievement. They helped her with yard work and shopping trips, and remodeled her home to make things more convenient for her. We appreciated her kind and giving nature, as she was always there for us no matter what the occasion. We will all miss her support, guidance and love. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Melvin; and beloved husband Sam. We would like to thank Rocky Mountain Care Center and Rocky Mountain Hospice, and their caring, compassionate staff. Services will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, Monday, July 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior to the service. No flowers, please. Friends so wishing may contribute to a charity of their choice in Marie's memory. Online condolences at www.larkinmortuary.com

I didn't know Ms Marie, but after reading of her many achievements and all the people in her life, she seems to be a wonderful person and will surely be miss by all of you who knew her. May her memories bring you comfront.
My mother-in-law, same last name, Catherine Giovengo, passed on July 9 at the age of 91. My husband and I and her very large family had the pleasure of having her with us for so many years.
