Natalie Reed Obituary

1957 ~ 2013
Natalie Reed passed away quietly and peacefully on Friday evening September 6 at the age of 55. It was with unyielding optimism and her engaging smile that she confronted the various cancers that eventually completed her mortal life. She slipped from the embrace of family and friends at her home in Salt Lake City into the waiting embrace of family and friends in her eternal home. One of those waiting her return was her little sister Libby, whose birthday was the previous day.
Natalie is the daughter of John and Edith (Grandma Dee Dee) Reed. During her final hours, Mom kept Natalie's feet warm knowing that "Daddy" would soon see those beautiful feet leap with joy and dance once again. Natalie is a dancer.
Natalie is a musician: a violinist, violin teacher, singer and conductor, who earned an honors BA from BYU, and a Masters in violin performance from the University of Utah. Her PhD studies were at Indiana University where she was a student of Josef Gingold.
Natalie grew up in Salt Lake City living near Liberty Park, graduating from East High School. She served an LDS mission in the Germany Munich mission later returning to her beloved Salzburg. She traveled widely, with her music taking her to Alaska, Singapore, Finland, England, Europe, and the Caribbean. She lived in Washington D.C.; L.A. (where she substituted in the Los Angeles Philharmonic); San Francisco; Bloomington, Indiana; and Santa Barbara, California; eventually returning home to Salt Lake City.
Natalie was a teacher, coach and trusted confidante to her countless private violin students. Many of them are now violin teachers or professional musicians themselves, often sending their children to Natalie knowing of her powerful combination of competence and compassion. She also worked as a Life Coach, a Realtor, an Office Manager, and a Ballot Initiatives Administrator.
Natalie was a rich contributor to the professional music community in Salt Lake. She played with the Utah Symphony, and The Orchestra at Temple Square. Natalie was at home in the recording studio or on stage as she played for many artists, including: Glen Campbell, Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson, Sarah Brightman, the Four Tenors, Tom Selleck, Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Transiberrean Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller, Josh Groban, Kurt Bestor, Kenneth Cope, Alex Boye, Jon Schmidt, Jenny Jordan, Jenny Oaks Baker.
Natalie wrestled with the disease of depression. She reached out to others in a very personal and authentic way, knowing of the despair. She brought hope to those feeling hopeless; she could say, "I know," and really knew. Like Jesus, whom she loved, she lifted up those whose heads hung down and whose hands reached up.
She was a fabulous aunt to 27 nieces and nephews and their 52 children.
Natalie is preceded in death by her father, John; brother, Byron; sister, Barbara; and baby sister, Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be held at the Hillside Stake Center, 1400 South 1889 East, at 11:00 am, Saturday September 14, with visitation one hour before. A viewing will be held at the Mountain View Third Ward, 1889 South 1700 East, 7:30-9:00 pm Friday before the funeral.

Memories and Condolences
for Natalie Reed

Not sure what to say?

September 25, 2013

Just wanting to send my heartfelt love and sympathy to the Reed family. I found out today about Natalie's passing and along with my sorrow came a flood of memories. I played the violin all through high school with Natalie and we became very close friends. I have such fond memories of many hours spent in the Reed home and I love and admire this special family. Natalie and I were roommates our first year at BYU and shared all our hopes and dreams. I went on BYU study abroad to Austria the semester after Natalie went and I gratefully remember a long letter that she sent me before I left with tons of advice. I asked Natalie to be one of my bridesmaids but her mission call came just before the wedding and she faithfully left to serve in Germany...and her sweet mother came to the wedding. Ever since I got married, I have lived in Michigan and have only seen Natalie a few times, but I will always love her as a dear friend and am grateful for the things that I learned from her and for all the experiences that we shared. I am so thankful for Natalie's part in my life.
Love and prayers to the Reed family,

Prayers to Natalie's Family, I was so sorry to hear of her passing. I, too, have not seen much of Natalie since East High graduation. But knew of her amazing talents and often marveled as I heard of her many world travels. An amazing servant and steward she was. Also so courageous and brave to face depression added to her other trials. What a remarkable woman. I wish I could've had more contact with her. You are lucky to have this wonderful daughter, sister, aunt in your lives. God Bless.

Natalie is captured in the beautiful picture of her smiling above. I'll miss her & we'll all miss the beautiful music she made. It was a pleasure to work with her over the years. Her talents will be sorely missed, yet they live on through her students and music she shared. She was a rare treasure.

I attended a ward for several years with Natalie where we became friends. We shared a love for music and she gave me incredible insight to many composer's works. But more than anything, I recognized her compassion, charity and love of God and her Savior in her actions and words. I am grateful that I became friends and shared time with Natalie, she blessed my life.

Natalie was my student at BYU and a wonderful member of our Study Abroad Group in Salzburg, 1977. She was a friend of our family, especially Alison. Donna and I tried to visit her at her home, only to be find out later that she was in deep sleep and didn't hear our entreaties at the door. But she came to our home in Provo a few weeks only to take leave. When we offered to increase our prayers for her healing, she declined, asking rather that we pray for her release, that she was ready to go. A tender "Auf Wiedersehen" we will long remember.

I trusted and loved Natalie enough to send my precious students to her, after giving them 10 years of my life. I consider this to be the greatest tribute I can give. She was a fabulous teacher, putting her whole heart into the work she did with students. Natalie is a beautiful woman, I will always think of her with the greatest of admiration.

Natalie was my violin teacher many years ago. She was beautiful (inside and out), vivacious, patient, and she taught me life-lessons right along with violin! She helped music come alive for me. Her life is a great example of using God-given talents to bless the lives of countless people. She will be missed.

Natalie and I have had a mutual admiration going on for many years. We often sat on the same stand in orchestras and when it was boring, we would compose limericks in German. I will miss her very much

So sorry to hear of Natalie's passing . . .

She was a beautiful woman, full of grace, whom I saw as a role model when I was young and studying the violin. She continued to be someone to emulate as I grew older and I always loved hearing her make music. I remember her being always positive, always prepared, and always giving her best effort.

Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your amazing family during this difficult time. Thank you for the music and faith that you continue to share.

I don't know your family, but I read this obituary, and my heart was so very touched, I had to write to you and tell you thank you so very much for sharing this amazing person with me... I love the violin and music, and I know that I have seen Natalie on Sunday mornings, with Music and the Spoken Word. My Father in Law is Richard L. Evans, and this program has been a special part of our lives for many years. I am sure that Heavenly Father is so very delighted to have one of his virtuous, lovely, talented daughters home with Him. I was so very moved by her and her life. Thank you so much, and again, I am sorry for your loose.

Natalie was my violin teacher back in the early 80's. She was a joy to learn from. She helped me to express music from my heart and soul as she danced during our lessons and demonstrated the music so beautifully. I will always remember her smile and goodness. I'm so saddened to think of her suffering battling cancers and depression. The words you chose to describe her attitudes, character, and accomplishments transported me back to her living room and my lessons as though I was with her again. Thank you Natalie! I am a better person because of you!

I spent many happy hours sitting close to Natalie in the recording studio, so glad to call her a friend. She has inspired me to be a better person, a more dedicated teacher and a loyal friend. You will be sorely missed on this side by all who knew you, but I can only imagine the shouts of joy by those who have received you and are enjoying your company now. Sending love and prayers to your amazing family.

I met Natalie in 1969 when were both young kids and played as "kids" in "the Music Man" at South High School. Natalie wrote me a message in my Playbill and I will always remember what a talented, even at that young age, she was. I am glad to have known her if only for a short time. It was worth it. God bless you and your family.- Bryan Hague

To Natalie's family and Dear Natalie,
Oh Natalie, I already miss you so much. You were like a Sister to me. For certain, one of the Best Sister Missionary in my Father's Mission in Munich Germany. It gives me some comfort to know that you died peacefully. My thoughts and prayers go to your dear family, mother, Paul, Meredith, Bethany and of course many others I have not met.

I will never forget, when I met you in Munich as a Sister Missionary in the Allescher str. 31 in 1979. You brought light to my life with your positive, inspirational personality, beauty and extraordinary talent of performing Music with your Violin. I always looked up to you and was in awe by your many talents.

When I moved to America, you introduced me to your friends in a new life of a new country. You, Jackie and I loved the beach and drove to S.Ca. We stayed with your aunt and lost the key to her house on the beach. An adventure I will never forget. You and your mother played at my wedding. You stayed in close contact over the years, giving me a listening ear and never once forgot my Birthday.
When I went through some of the darkest days of my life, you supported me and played a HUGE supportive role. My roots were moved back to Utah, where you acted as my Real Estate Agent finding my new home in Fruit Heights. It has been a haven of peace for me. Thank you for having shared your life with so many, who have benefitted from your spirit. I am a better person, because of you. The evening of tribute to you last January, sums up how we all feel about you. It was the best concert I have ever attended.
Love you. Maja Busche Wensel ,

Dear Reed Family,
As a student of Mrs. Reeds taking piano lessons, I often played withh Natalie and the rest of the girls. My heart goes out to the family during this time of grief. Love to all.

Natalie has been a dear friend and violin teacher to my son Peter who is serving a mission in Sweden. Her advice to him is a treasure and shows her great faith. Thank you Natalie. Until we meet again. Deanna Lambson

"Dear Peter, I am finding in life that as we let go, the spirit takes over more. I am learning to trust and the key is SO simple. Never let yourself feel fear. Always feel love, it's that easy. Each day if I want to feel any negative emotions I realize that that will keep my body from healing and that the only way to heal is to trust and to feel love. I wake up and think, death or happiness my only two choices :) I am learning to become VERY happy and realizing all of us can make this choice every single day. If there is any worry in your heart just let it go and dwell in a space of happiness and love. That's the space where all the miracles happen. You are being watched and attended by a ton of angels and by Christ so just enjoy! No worries, be happy."
