Rae Bowcutt Obituary

Nov. 18, 1943 ~ Jan. 9, 2014
Rae Dawn Hughes Bowcutt died peacefully at home, with family at her bedside, on January 9, 2014 after gracefully enduring a 9 year battle with Alzheimer's. She was born November 18, 1943 in Malad, Idaho to Jess Hughes and Rachel Evans Hughes. Rae graduated from Malad High School where she served as Class Secretary, Historian and Editor of the school newspaper. She reminisced often about growing up in Malad, recalling fondly that her family life was a small slice of heaven.
Rae later attended Utah State University and Idaho State University. She married John David Ference in 1966, later divorced. Together they had one son, Dave, who brought her great happiness and joy. In 1980, Rae met the love of her life, Douglas Lance Bowcutt. They were married on February 6, 1988. Rae worked her entire adult life in the food brokerage industry where she was constantly praised by her clients and supervisors for meticulous professionalism. She also worked as a waitress at the Little America Restaurant for 20 years, where she enjoyed engaging with all segments of society.
Rae enjoyed the simple things in life, in particular, reading on the porch or in the backyard, trips to Yellowstone Park and Capitol Reef, cooking for her family, spending time with her grandchildren and making her surroundings more beautiful. She was an excellent gift giver. She was very soft spoken, patient and forgiving. Rae had a keen sense of humor, reserved primarily for those who knew her well. She was extremely tolerant of others, long before it was fashionable. Rae loved family traditions and worked tirelessly to ensure they were fulfilled. She lived a beautiful life and will be missed dearly.
Rae is survived by her husband Doug, her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Marilyn Ference and grandchildren, Sara, Emily and Jake. She is also survived by her stepchildren Justin (Nikki) Bowcutt, Chris (Melanie) Bowcutt, Jamie (Martin) Gillbert, Jay (Ashley) Bowcutt, four step grandchildren and her brothers Trevor (Daisy) Hughes and Lloyd Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Kyle (Marie) Hughes and beloved sister Judy (Jim) Gillespie.
The family would like to thank Doug, who patiently and valiantly cared for Rae at their home until her death and everyone from Reliance Health Care for their loving service, in particular Vicki Adams, who was "beyond wonderful."
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn,3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
