RICHARD BIRKINSHAW Obituary

Richard Williams "Dick" Birkinshaw 5/17/1927 ~ 4/21/2010 Richard's determined soul and optimistic spirit was evident every day of his life. He had a remarkable love of God, family and country.Blessed with loving and devoted parents, Emma Jeanne and Charles William Birkinshaw, Richard often spoke of the happy home he shared with his brothers and sisters William Earl (deceased), Charles Lynn, Marion Clark (Dean) and Carol Jeanne (deceased). Serving in the US Navy was a great honor for Richard but he was also humbled as he believed he received more than he could ever give. He was forever mindful of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. He enjoyed happy memories of his college years at the University of Utah where he not only earned a BS in business but met his wife. He married Janet Johnson (deceased) in the Salt Lake Temple and had three children: Annette Elizabeth, Brian Richard (deceased) and Kent Charles. They were thrilled with their grandchildren: B Christopher (Celisha) and Amanda Bee "Minda". Two great-grandsons, Jaxon Brient and Cohen Christian, were the brightest little lights of Richard's life! Richard had a superior work ethic that resulted in distinguished careers with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Becton-Dickinson. He remained close to the people with whom he worked to his final day. Perhaps his most rewarding career was that of a proud volunteer at the VA Medical Center where he worked for the past 12 years. In fact, Richard was to receive the Presidential Lifetime Service Award for logging 4,399 hours of volunteer service! His dedication to fellow veterans brought great joy and purpose to his life. The family wishes to thank the health care professionals at LDS Hospital, VA Medical Center and Superior Care Hospice for their exceptional skill and kindness. A graveside service will be held 12 noon Monday, April 26 at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South. In lieu of flowers, please brighten a military veteran's day with a friendly conversation or word of encouragement in Richard's honor.

I remember Dick as a good man who gave me a job when I needed it and taught me many things. He was a very interesting person who had many great stories to tell and was fun to talk to. May God bless you Annette and all your family.
