ROBERT BOWEN Obituary

Robert Grant Bowen 12/12/1922 ~ 8/21/2011 Robert Grant Bowen, age 88, passed away peacefully on August 21st, 2011 surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson's.Bob was born December 12th, 1922 to Clyde and Laura Bowen of Malad City, Idaho. On April 2nd 1942, Bob married his sweetheart, Ruth Anderson and they were sealed in the Salt Lake temple on Oct. 6th, 1965. Robert knew the value of hard work and applied it in everything he did. He was called to active duty in l942 and later fought in World War II in the Battle of the Bulge. Education was very important to Bob; he graduated with honors from Utah State. He was a teacher and administrator for 34 years where he was the student body advisor at Davis High school and then later became assistant principal at Viewmont High School. Bob had a great love for the students that he worked with and they loved him in return. He believed in giving them second chances and spent countless hours helping them reach their potential. Bob had many loves including sports, BYU, spending time with friends, making sherbet ice cream, and for many years until he passed away, taking care of the sand traps at the Bountiful Ridge golf course. Family was the core of Bob's focus and he provided a constant and powerful example of service which will endure. He will be remembered as a person who exemplified the pure love of Christ in all he did. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; twin daughters, Karen Alvey (Ron) and Sharon Blackburn, sons; Robert Jr. (Dixie), and Charles Scott: two sisters, Kathalee Nelson and Helen Harris, and two brothers; LaVar Bowen and George Bowen, 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one sister and two grandchildren. The family wishes to express appreciation to Lakeview hospital staff, Community nursing service, and the Administrative catering service for the care they rendered to Bob and our family. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful 39th Ward chapel, 600 East 1500 South. Friends and family may call Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary and Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 at the church. Interment at Bountiful City Cemetery. Dear Ruth and family,

I have considered it a privilege to have known Bob and your family for the past
42 years. While Viewmont was my introduction to your family, Karon and I have truly enjoyed all the other opportunities to be with you. Bob will always be remembered as a gracious man with a big heart. I consider it a privilege to have worked with him. I always felt that he cared about Viewmont and the students and staff. We all felt that we were important and as a result, always tried to live up to his expectations. He was a blessing to many. May your family be comforted by the love and warmth of caring friends. Hi Family!
My thoughts and prayers are with you guys! I hope you take comfort in knowing that Bob is well again and probably enjoying a big party with all the family that has passed ahead of him.
My memories of Bob and Ruth and all the family gatherings are cherished memories. He was always great for a big smile, a tease, and a batch of sherbet. I was one of the lucky ones at school that could call him "Uncle Bob."
Bob was the best kind of family...he was Mom and Dad's best friend.
Love you all!

I had Robert for Math and as a Student Body Advisor at Davis in the 70's. He definitely had a love for students and I was one who took advantage of his "second chance" philosophy. Sorry to hear of his passing but what a full and fruitful life.

I was one of the 'second chance' kids at Viewmont. Mr. Bowen was the best. He would come into Mitchell's 76 to buy gas and talk for a long time just to see how I was doing. What a great man!

Bowen Family:

I have never had the pleasure of meeting your father, husband, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, but I feel like I know him by having a next door office to his son, Bob Jr., at the Utah Division of Air Quality for many years. In reading the obituary, it is clear that Bob Sr. is a very good teacher because his son has the same admirable traits as his father. It is an honor, a privilege, and a pleasure to work with the son of Bob Sr. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Bowen Family,
What a great man Bob Bowen is and was! As one of hundreds (thousands?) of students he mentored and blessed at Davis High, I feel such gratitude this day. "Mr. Bowen" was there for me, for us, every day. His smile, his understanding, his encouraging way all helped to pull us through. He stood at the crossroads and gently guided. He was fun, thoughtful, wise--even when we painted the venerable bust of George Washington in red, white and blue stripes. He knew us and still cared! We honor him today and offer you our sorrow and real sympathy. May you find peace through the Prince of Peace. With much gratitude on behalf of all the Class of '72.
