TIMOTHY PAINE Obituary

Timothy Johnson Paine 1954 ~ 2010 On April 6, 2010 Tim Paine, loving Husband, Father, Brother and Uncle, passed away at his home as a result of complications from a two-year illness with Brain Cancer. Tim was born on June 9, 1954 in Pittsburgh, PA to Frederick and Barbara Paine. He was the second of three sons and if you know the Paine brothers, then you know there was not a lack of excitement, trouble or mischief. They proudly refer to their mother as "Saint Barbara." Tim spent the first half of his childhood years growing up in rural Pittsburgh and then in Olympia Fields, IL, outside Chicago. He graduated from Rich Central High in 1972 where he excelled in track and basketball. Tim's college experience began at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. But soon he heard about all of the wonderful snow in Utah and quickly joined his older brother Freddie and transferred to the University of Utah. Before long, their younger brother Scott was here and the Brothers Paine made Utah their new home. Tim graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and later completed his MBA. Tim was a born leader and had a very successful and distinguished career with American Express, PageNet and most recently, eBay. There are many people who contribute their careers to Tim Paine saying that he gave them the chance they needed or he was the one who believed in them. It was true. Tim loved the people and that is what made him such an influential and respected leader to so many. His integrity, dedication and strong work ethic were unparalleled and you were a better person just for having known him. Oftentimes he was challenged to stand at the front doors of eBay to see if he could name each person coming into work. Not only did he know their name, but he could tell you a few personal things about them as well. Those were the things that set him apart from other leaders. He made significant contributions to each of these companies and left behind a legacy of valuable and loyal employees. He also had a strong sense of volunteer work. Tim spent countless hours giving of his time and money to several charities and organizations, most notably the National MS Society, where he served as the Utah Chapter President for many years. Tim was an accomplished athlete and had a strong physical drive. He completed the MS 150 Bike Race 20 consecutive times, Lotoja (Logan to Jackson Hole) twice, several marathons and half marathons including Chicago, and countless triathlons over the years. He was disciplined and driven and nothing was going to stop him from reaching his goals. He had a wonderful way of inspiring and encouraging those around him to push themselves to find their own physical strength. One of his favorite events was pacing his cousin Karen each year on the Squaw Peak and Wasatch 100 Marathons. His true love, however was skiing. He was a long-time member of the Church of Alta where he held a season's pass for more than 30 years. It was truly his "happy place" and nothing beat a day on the slopes with his brothers and good friends. Even if it did mean breaking trail for his buddy Lloyd. And whether it was a ski trip to Canada, camping and hiking in southern Utah or floating the Green River with his family and friends, Tim truly loved the outdoors and had a deep respect and appreciation for nature. His greatest accomplishment however was that of being a father. Nothing meant more to Tim than his daughters. He adored them and reveled in watching them learn, grow and experience life. Tim is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Barbara Paine. He is survived by his beloved wife Julie, precious daughters Abby and Olivia, son Michael, brothers Freddie and Scott (Jane), nephew Manton and nieces Hailey and Alden. Tim was a remarkable man who touched the lives of countless people throughout his life. He will be remembered, honored and deeply missed by many. A memorial service will be held April 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Dr. Visitation will be one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation in his name to the MS Society Utah Chapter or Friends of Alta. And if you just want to do something fun in the name of Tim Paine, ski the slopes at Alta or watch an episode of Top Gear on the BBC. A special thanks to the wonderful team of administering angels from CNS Hospice who made such a difficult time for our family a very peaceful and beautiful experience.

I recently heard a saying that the most tender among us are broken by life. It is often true that the sweetest and most tender souls only stay a short while on this Earth.

Jules, no amount of words will ever mend the ripping away of your soul mate. I know your time was relatively short, but it was (is) infinitely and endlessly beautiful.

I have so many fond memories of Tim and cherish them all, but I thought I would share this one.

If the sun was down enough to provide some shade in the driveway, anyone who drove by Tim’s house in the Summer had a good chance of catching him in the act of washing his car. No one appreciated a clean car more than Tim. And like everything in Tim’s life, he was very efficient and well thought out in his methods. He was the master of car washing.

I had just purchased a car on eBay and his infectious enthusiasm had rubbed off on me. I began taking my car to the car wash and was doing my best to keep it shiny. After several discussions, pointers and tips, one day Tim invited me over to his driveway to show me how to properly wash a car. I felt like Jack Nicholas had just invited me to Augusta National for a golf lesson. I went over and we started. He went over the process – never wash a car in the sun, use the right soap, a brush for the wheels and tires, proper wash mitt, how often to wax…. But the thing that will stick with me forever was what happened just when I thought we were all done. With Tim Paine enthusiasm and his mysterious tone, he said - wait, wait, there is one more thing….this is the thing that most people miss, but it is a sign of a job well done. He proceeded to open the driver’s door and pop the gas cap. He then washed and shined the inside of the gas cap compartment and with a crowning smile of achievement he gave me his ..Huh? Huh? See that?…

He was a one of a kind gem and I am a much better person for knowing him. I will miss him always.

Dear Paine Family,
Although it has been nearly twenty years since I worked with Tim at American Express, I will always remember him as an amazing leader who truly cared about each individual employee. He was always warm, personable, and knew everyone by name. His dedication and work ethic were inspiring, yet he was interested in making work more enjoyable for everyone. He loved people, he loved work, he loved life and he always wanted to make life more meaningful and enjoyable for others. I will always appreciate his positive influence in my life!

Julie and family - I am so sorry for your loss. Tim was beyond wonderful. The last few times I saw him were in PRP meetings and he often sat by me and while we were waiting for the meeting to get started I would show him recent pictures of my little boy and he was genuinely interested and we talked about how fast they grow. I am so sorry. My heart is with you all – Kristi Diemoz

My heart goes out to Julie and her family in this time of great sorrow. I did not know Tim very well however I worked at Rich's Bagels and he was a very good customer there. I remember how everyone in the store would light up when he walked in and they would all join him in conversation. He truly made friends everywhere he went.

After hearing of Tim's passing my eyes swelled up with tears for Julie and her family and they are in my prayers.

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

I will always remember my last conversation with Tim as it meant so much to me. At the time my mom had just been diagnosed with cancer but Tim was well into his battle by then. In spite of all that he was going through he was genuinely concerned for my mom and spent the next couple of hours giving me encouragement and guidance on how to best help her through her illness.

It was in that one conversation that I really got to know Tim. His strength, courage and generosity in the face of such adversity was remarkable and continues to inspire me.

Julie, my thoughts are with you and your family.

Paine Family

Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you as you deal with such a great loss. We know that Tim will be with us always, especially as we enjoy all that life has to offer just as he taught us to. All of our runs and hikes at Alta will be that more special knowing Tim is always there. He was such a great friend, mentor, and leader and his zest for life should be a great lesson. We feel so fortunate that we had a chance to celebrate with him and hug him one last time - that night will always be remembered and cherished by all of us. We love you and are here for you.

Julie,

I am so sorry to hear about Tim. I cannot be there on Tuesday to pay my regards to a great man, but please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls at this time. There are so many things I remember about Tim - the crazy staff meetings, the constant conversations about cars, the genuine way he cared about everyone, the name game at the eBay doors...etc. However, two things I will always remember about Tim are: First, every time I came home from Canada, Tim always asked how Heather and the kids were doing - he cared - and you knew it. Second, I can still remember the night in Vancouver when you, Tim and I met up in the hotel lobby after the two of you had completed a run on the sea wall. You had just started dating, and I remember the pure joy in both your faces. Lean on God at this time - he will provide what you need. And, in the years to come, please show all these comments about Tim to his daughters - I am sure they know, but this is a great reminder of a truly great man and father. They should be very proud - I know all of us are.

Thanks,
Pete Boudreaux

Dear Julie and family,
My heart is broken that this time has come because like everyone who knew him, Tim made such a difference in my life. I hate so much to use the past tense, but he was one of the best men I've ever known. I have so many wonderful memories of him. At work, just because of the nature of our jobs, we didn't always agree but we always, always supported each other and I learned that from him. I laughed more with Tim than i have with any other partner in my career, and personally he was such a good friend. I have a million memories of Tim, but one that I thought I'd share. Once, when I'd moved to a new house he'd had occasion to come by and teased me mercilessly because I didn't have a lawn mower yet and my yard was an overgrown mess as a result, and then a few days later I came home and the yard looked beautiful. Somewhere in his crazy schedule he'd found the time to pack his own mower up, took it to my house and had mowed my lawn. I'm sure to him it wasn't a big deal, but to me it was such an incredibly sweet thing to do. I will miss him so much and he will always be in my heart as you all will be.

Love,
Kathy

I am a better person for having known Tim. I still remember the first time we sat down and talked, how close our paths in life were even though we didn't meet until 1998. Seems so unfair that you never know when you talk with someone that it will be for the last time. Tim came into my store just before christmas 07, never would have guessed that would the last time. I regret that it was. No matter what you will always be my friend.

Olivia and Abby, I have known your dad for over 25 years and feel lucky to have so many memories. My favorite memory was how excited he was when you were born. He loves you both very much. I believe that he will always be watching after you!

You already know how wonderful your mother is.... continue to look to her for strength. .

Most of all, remember to show love to those around you, live your life to it's fullest, and be happy. Your dad would want you to be a peace and to be happy.

Dear Paine Family,
It was with great saddness that I read about Tim's passing. I had the honor to work with him on the MS 150 Bike Tour in the late 90s. So much of the great advice he shared with me has stayed with me over the years -- and I truly believe that my life has been enriched by his wise counsel. He will be missed, but know that his legacy of humor, wisdom and memories will stay with many of us for the rest of our lives.

Tomorrow as I finish my last ski day of the season, I will do it honor of Tim who loved life so much.

He was a great leader that I worked with at AMEX and eBay.

He will be very missed. His ability to bring a human element into the workplace was a gem for all
people that had the opportunity to work and know him.

May you rest in Peace Tim.

We will keep a close eye on when they open the gates for the quick hike up the ridge above Collins chair, indicating Greeley Bowl is good-to-go with a remembrance of a Great Man that once was here.

Julie may God comfort you in the days ahead.

What Is This Thing That Men Call Death?

What is this thing that men call death?
This quiet passing in the night?
‘Tis not the end but genesis
Of better worlds and greater light

O God, touch Thou my aching heart
And calm my troubled, haunting fears
Let hope and faith, transcendent, pure
Give strength and peace beyond my tears.

Tim was a wonderful person to work with. We sat in several training sessions together back in 1999 when we were both starting at eBay. I felt he was a genuine spirit then and found he was a pleasure to work with from then on.
I understand what you have gone through these last two years as we lost a daughter to the same unforgiven monster in 2008. She made it 18 months, so I know that Tim was a fighter to make it 2 years! He will be missed.
Our hearts and prayers are with you.

April 10, 2010

One of my favorite Tim memories was when I was a supervisor and attended one of Tim's staff meetings in Monica's absence. The agenda consisted of catching up on the previous night's episode of The Office. He was so nervous that a supervisor was being negatively influenced by managers goofing off in a staff meeting.

In reality, it was one of many lessons I learned from Tim. Sometimes we take life too seriously and it's good to take a break to have fun with those around us.

My heart is with you and your family, Julie. I'll never forget Tim.

I recall Tim's very first day at eBay. In those early days we were all skeptical of any outside hirings. Well, it took him all of 30 seconds to win me over and change my mind. He is an inspiration to me and I will never forget him.

When PT Pain enlisted in my bootcamp I went to his work station at ebay to inspect his quarters. I saw he had a crossont in his fridge. he was scared that i saw it and that he would have to do many pushups for it being in his fridge. I will always remember him as one of my toughest pts. He brought a lot of his co workers to me to help my business getting started. Thank you PT Pain. our ranks at bootcamp jess and co will remember you. Jess Thomas (slc , Utah)

Dear Julie, I am so sad to see this day come. My prayers and heart have been opened to you both many times over the last two years. I love you dearly. Thank you for your light you share with all of those around you. I truly admire you for your commitment, heart and strength you offer freely to those you love. Tim shared so many of his gifts with me. One of his gifts I will never forget was his encouragement to "find your passion and live it." He lived his passions everyday. May God bless you and the children during this time. Much love.

April 9, 2010

Back in the early days of eBay, when Tim first joined the company, he knew nothing about eBay and I knew nothing about business. After our staff meetings with Scott Newman and the dreaded Tuesdays with Maynard, Tim and I would seek out each other and I would explain to him all the eBay issues he didn't yet understand, and he'd explain to me all the business objectives, terminology, and strategies I didn't quite get (well, and schmooze about Survivor, of course). I told him years later how incredibly grateful I was for his tutelage - I honestly didn't believe I could have lasted at eBay without his help. He looked at me like I was crazy and exclaimed that he had been constantly grateful that I taught him!

Tim always saw in us what we couldn't see in ourselves...and because of this, we became greater versions of ourselves than we ever thought possible. No better definition of a true leader.

Every time we moved to a new house, there would be a knock at the door and it was Tim in his VW ‘stopping by’; every time I ran a race, there would be Tim at the half way mark cheering loudly- even after his battle began; and of course, every time I was hungry . . . Tim would always be up for a burrito with chicken, cheese and rice only. Tim, we really love you and miss you- thank you for touching our lives forever. To Julie, Michael and the Girls, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Zach & Steph

I met Tim on one of my very first backcountry ski tours with other newly found companions, one of which was Scott. I was mortified that I would freeze to death out there, but Tim kept me aptly distracted with tales of bike riding. The Paine boys have a magical way of assuring you that any ski situation you find yourself in really is a good idea. Holding true to this conviction, Tim escorted me to the top of the Baldy chutes. Given the company, it’s a day I will always cherish.
Tim had a jubilant way of sharing experiences with you. The grace with which he melded a professional career, athletic adventures and a rich family life is something we all aspire to. His continuing example will be missed.
Much love,

We were sitting at Einstein’s back in May of 2008 and heard his booming voice. We knew it was Tim. We had not seen him in years. We introduced our oldest son just heading off on his mission. Tim talked excitedly about his girls, and Julie and Michael - planning a mission too. We don’t think he knew yet the road ahead. When we left Tim we said to our son…this is the man! The man who taught us to ski high rustler, kicked our butts on slick rock, dared us to careen down immigration canyon on bikes brakeless, inspired us to do our first triathlon, introduced us to cheese enchiladas at Rio Grande, taught us the delights of camping in a VW van, became the reason our first house was in Sugarhouse, became a trusted colleague at Amex, became a friend for life. We skied at Alta last week twice. Best snow of the year. We reminisced about Tim all over again. His legacy lives on as does he.

Every time i met Tim at global company events, i was freshly reminded what a warm, hard-working, decent colleague he was and it is easy for me to understand how so many eBayers who got to work closely with him became real friends and fans. Based in London, that was never my privilege, but i send heart-felt condolences to all his family and friends along with this assurance that so many of us who only got to know him a little, nonetheless admired and respected Tim and will also miss him.

We may be in Houston, but our hearts are Utahn. And it was during our visits to see family in Utah that we were fortunate enough to meet Tim, dear friend of our father/in-law, Lloyd. We would meet-up at various locations: on the slopes, where we were breathless keeping up with Tim skiing all of his 'favorite routes' at Alta, or at Lloyd/Paula's house after a run or in the midst of a bike ride. Positive, full of energy, full of life, and enjoying every minute of it, his strength was ever-present especially during the months of his illness. We are fortunate to have him still with us - present in what he gave of himself to each of us. Thanks TIm. Our best to his family in this time of grief.

Dear Family

I knew Tim and loved him like a brother when we both worked at Coon, King and Knowlton/DMJM many years ago when he was going to school. I miss those days and am sorry we didn't get to stay closer in touch all of these years. There was nothing like playing basketball with Tim. He always made those he played with better as in life. I pray that his family will be watched over as I know he will be doing. May God bless you all.

Tim - I am truly honored to have met you, work with you, and chat about life with you. Yesterday morning when I woke up, your tragic passing was the first thing I read. It moved me. It reminded me that life is way too short. Too short to let petty things bring us down. Thank you again for your inspiration - Julie & Kids, my heartfelt condolences for your loss go out to each of you.

Dear loved Ones of Tim,
I did not have the pleasure of meeting this man, but when I read the memories shared by those who did know this generous and courageous man, I can see that those whose lives, he did touch were far richer for his love and caring heart. My heart goes out to you and I will light a candle for Tim. May God walk along side you at this time.

Dear Julie and Family,

I wrote to Tim so now this is for you. Julie, what a blessing you are for Tim! We are inspired by your strength, optimism, and eternal perspective. As much as you say he gives you, you give to him. You make him so fulfilled. And, while you may not get to physically hold him for now, that day will soon come and what a time that will be. Buckle up!

And, Michael, he'll be there with you on your mission. Just don't spend too much time talking cars rather than knocking on doors! You are well prepared, and Tim will be your biggest fan.

We love you!

I have been extremely blessed in that I had the privilege of working with Tim through my entire time at PageNet and also here at eBay which amounts to well over ten years. Although I never worked directly with Tim, he always had time to stop and ask how I was doing and take a few minutes to chat with me about anything from work to skiing to sharing stories about how his little girls would play horse show jumping around his bedroom while their Mother sat on the bed and judged each jump. I know he took this same time and care with everyone at work. It truly takes a talented, special and gifted man to do this and at the same time lead, grow and inspire large companies as brilliantly as he did. Thank you, Tim.

Tim,

Har. You're not gone; you're just skiing powder on runs the rest of us can't see. I won't talk about you in the past tense, because you are very much alive and will continue to be involved in my mortal life. Thank you for your enduring and nonjudgmental friendship on both sides of the veil. You are a treasure in my heart. I cherish our conversations and your joke-telling while we sat on the floor of the incredibly thin apartment, or on the Staten Island Ferry, or in the outfield on the American Express softball team, in Bruce Baird's stat class, on the couch in one of your Sugarhouse bungalows eating Godfather's Pizza, in a canoe on the Delaware River, while playing games with my son's plastic army men, in a tent in the Poconos surrounded by killer squirrels, even while preparing for "Tuesdays with Maynard" at eBay.

I know you will be very busy making things happen and making friends in your new digs. But, continue to stay close and in touch. I need your listening ear, positive outlook, and your latest joke you can't wait to tell me.

Love you, my friend,

Though I only worked with Tim briefly. He left with me a positive lasting impression. I would have loved to have worked with him more closely. It is not surprising that he left such an incredible mark with all those that he came in contact with. It is with deep sadness I say good bye to him, but knowing he is resting comfortably. Deepest respect and warm regards to the entire Paine family. God bless.

Dearest Julie and children. We feel so strongly for you, and the terrible loss you have experienced. Tim was a wonderful man who always made a difference to those who he came in contact with - and I know he made a difference in all of your lives. We were happy to share him with you, and will keep his memory alive, every time we are on a bike, running, hiking, or skiing. Tim will always be a part of our outdoor experiences, and we will honor his memory by making sure we experience, respect, and conserve our environment as much as we can.
We will also honor him by speaking up about political issues that matter, and making sure our - and his - voices are heard.
All the best - always.

Dear Freddie and Scott,
I'm heart broken to hear the news of Tim's passing. I ran into him several years ago when he was biking and had pictures of his darling girls around his neck. Tim was a man of integrity, humor and kindness. I would have never skied the shoots at Alta dared to jump off a bridge into a river below, and be thrilled to have large fry, small fry cheese burger with mustard only on Thanksgiving day without knowing this man. Dearest Julie and Family,
I met Tim in 1998 while working for him at PageNet. He was an amazing man to work for- lead with integrity and a fantastic sense of humor. He taught me much as an employee but probably made the most impact on my personal life.
In January of 2000 I returned home from a holiday trip in Seattle and told Tim that I had met the man I was going to marry and I wanted to move back home to Seattle. He didn't laugh but instead said "Well, we better get you back home then!" He cashed in on the "VP" chip and helped to have a position created for me back home in Seattle with the local PageNet office. If he hadn't worked so hard on my behalf I wouldn't have been able to go home... I did marry the man I spoke to Tim about. We have been married for almost 8 years and were just blessed with the birth of our 4th child.
I have thought of Tim many, many times over the years. I have often wondered if I would have ended up in the same place if it hadn't been for Tim Paine... perhaps, but I doubt it.
I was blessed to know Tim Paine, to have worked for him and am so in awe of what he did every day for his employees. He let "real life" sneak in to the building every day, he got to know us and our real lives beyond the work we did for him. He truly changed lives... he changed mine and put me on the path to the life I have now. There are not enough words to show my gratitude.
My heart is with you and your family at this time. He was an amazing man.

In 1981 Tim accompanied my sister and the rest of the Weggeland family to Hawaii. Tim's exuberance and passion for life had us all jumpimg off cliffs into the ocean, highway bridges into rivers and swinging from vines!!! I will dearly miss visiting with Tim and his bike atop of Millcreek and Brighton. We love you Tim!!

Tim was an amzing man that touched the lives of many people. I owe Tim a big thank you for all the mentoring and advice he has given me over the years. I can only hope Tim knew the positive impact he has had on me both professionally and personally. I met Tim back in 1998 when we were both working for PageNet. Tim continuously inspired the entire staff at PageNet to move forward and accomplish lofty goals. Times were hectic and very stressful, yet Tim was always smiling and encouraging people to be the best they could be. There were also happy times like our fund raiser where Tim was dunked several times in the dunk tank. He was a real person that had the unique ability to connect with people. I learned several life lessons from Tim that include work/life balance, take risks and try something new at work and a love for Myers Briggs. Tim’s dedication also inspired me to volunteer with the MS Society of Utah for years. He truly led by example. I know that I am not the only person Tim had a positive impact on, and I hope he knew how many lives he touched. Tim will be missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He was a great man.

To Tim's family, I am very sorry to hear of Tim's passing. I am an eBay employee, and I echo what has been said about him. He was very kind and respectful to me when I first started at eBay 5 years ago. He would joke wih me in the breakroom on occasion, and it meant a lot to me to have eBay's leadership be so friendly and caring because I was going through my own very rough time back then. It made me feel good about working at eBay. I feel sure that he has gone straight to Heaven. I pray for comfort for all Tim's family and friends.

Tim was a true leader. As an eBay CSR Tim was always happy and smiling and willing to take time out of his busy day to help. It was his mentoring that assisted me in learning how to interview for positions I wanted. Due to his efforts I have been able to expand my career beyond what I could have ever hoped for. Now as I look at how he has lived his life he is mentoring me one last time and I can only hope to be half the man, father, and human being he was.

Dear Julie, Michael and family,

I spend most of my time these days thinking about Tim, his illness and the way that you, Julie have taken such great care of him... I can only imagine how this illness must change a person in so many ways... I love all of you so very much. Rick and I are here for anything now and always.

To Julie, I can not say enough about how much I respect you. You are the STRONGEST woman I will ever have the blessing to call a friend. I know how lucky Tim must have felt before his death and now that he has past to have you as his partner and wife. His girls are very blessed to have you help them through this.

To Michael, I love you my buddy. I am sure this has been difficult seeing your mother go through this for 2 years.. If I can help in anyway, please call me.

I will be seeing you on Tuesday, if not sooner.

Xoxoxo,
Kath, Rick and the kids

Tim is in our hearts forever. He touched our family deeply, introducing us to biking, car washing, Barbacoa, the MS Ride, Alta, and so much more. Tim, we miss you so very much, and wish we had had more time to be with you. I regret not having done the half iron man with you, but am grateful for all we did do together. You were one of the best neighbors we could have ever asked for. Thank you for all you did for us. We love you and your family very much. May God bless all of you.

Dear Julie, Freddie and Scott, I was so saddened to hear of Tim's passing. He was an amazing friend and colleague that I cherished working with. Spent many days at Alta with him back in the American Express days. I hired him into Amex and was his first manager there. I knew he was destined for great things with such a love for people and zest for life and whatever he embarked on. Have tried (unsuccessfully) to get a hold of him over the past year, sorry I didn't get to say goodbye. The world will miss him terribly; his kindness, intelligence and pure ability to have fun will not be forgotten by SO many... our truest condolences,
