THANISH KALIS Obituary
Thanish "Tom" Kalis 10/26/1963 ~ 7/16/2010 On July 16, 2010 Thanish "Tom" Kalis perished in a tragic helicopter accident in Salt Lake City Utah. Tom was born on the 26th Day of October 1963 to Patricia and Thano Kalis in Glendora, California. Tom married Dawn Marie Schuyler on the 25th day of December, 1987. They were later divorced but remained good friends. Tom married Melanie McWhorter on May 30, 1998. Melanie and Tom brought to their world three beautiful children. Kiana, Derek and Justin. These three children brought endless joy and happiness and Tom's passing will leave a tremendous void in their young lives. Tom's life was filled with many grand adventures. Tom attended Wooster High School in Reno, Nevada. Tom proudly served his country first as an Army reservist and then joined the United States Army and bravely served as a tank operator. Tom was honorably discharged after six years of military service. Tom's professional career included owning and operating a property service company, Owner/Operator of the "Welder-Dudes" and his most recent enterprise, owner of the "Heli-Dudes" Tom's most engaging attribute was his willingness to lend a hand to anyone that needed help. He was a true friend. Tom's passion for helicopters resulted in his attainment of his helicopter pilot rating. He continued his work in making it possible to provide the gift of helicopter flight to children of all ages throughout the State of Utah. It was his dream to continue this effort in all of the Western States. Sadly, his dream was cut short in this terrible accident. Also involved in the helicopter crash was Tom's brother, best friend and most avid cheerleader Darrin. Tom shared a unique and kindred relationship with his brother and they were inseparable. Darren remains in the hospital recovering from his severe injuries. Tom is survived by his wife Melanie, daughter Kiana age 11, son Derek age 10 and son Justin age nine. Brothers Darrin Kalis, Michael Kalis and sister Keena De Ann Cumba and step-brother Shawn Robbin Corri. Mother Patricia Kalis, grandmother Gladys Duncan. Tom was preceded in death by his father Thano Kallis on December 21, 1994. Funeral services will be held on the 22nd of July 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Veteran's Memorial Park at 17111 South Camp Williams Road in Bluffdale, Utah. Graveside services will be held immediately following the funeral services. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday the 21st day of July 2010 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Hunter 6th Ward located at 3930 South 6000 West in West Valley City, Utah. The family wishes to express their most sincere and humble thanks to all of those that have shown such passion, concern and love. Especially, the generous contribution made by the EMG Company. A fund has been established in the name of the Kalis Children at any Wells Fargo Bank Branch. Your mission has now been completed Tom. It is now time to close out your flight plan and move on to the next grand adventure. You will be greatly missed!
