Leslie Hilma Micken|
1947 ~ 2014
Layton, UT-Leslie Hilma Micken died peacefully Monday, March 3, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with melanoma. Mom lived her life with dignity, kindness, and unsurpassable strength.
She was born Leslie Hilma Shaw on January 24, 1947 in Quincy, Massachusetts to Leslie Robert and Thelma Liberty Shaw, the oldest sister of three brothers. She grew up in Hanover, Massachusetts and graduated from Hanover High School in 1964. She attended Ricker College in Houlton Maine and she graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1968 with a degree in Secondary Education and History. She married Robert Warren Micken on September 2, 1972 and together they enjoyed the adventure and moving that his Naval career brought.
She loved teaching 4th and 5th grades and after a 20 year hiatus she taught 1st grade. She also served in the Massachusetts Air National Guard. She loved to volunteer her time and talents at her children's schools, as a Sunday school teacher, and in military wives's groups. She particularly enjoyed working with the Hill A.F.B. Officer's Spouse's Club for many years. Her favorite job, however, was to be a mother and grandmother.
She loved spending time with her family and traveling with us. She visited all 50 U.S. states and several countries. She also enjoyed cooking, ice skating, snowshoeing, movies, painting, and photography. In recent years, she was an awesome grandmother and we enjoyed every day with her.
Leslie is tremendously loved and missed by her family and friends. She is survived by three children Christina (Jade), Cynthia, and Kyle (Marisol) as well as her three precious grandchildren, Lucia, Kyle Lucas, and Tristan. She is also survived by her two brothers Clifford Shaw (Sandra), and Dana Shaw (Susan), brother-in-law, Charles Thomas Micken (Laurie), nieces Alex, Aprille, and Kelly; nephews Matthew, Philip, Erick and Scott. Her two lifelong friends were Nancy Bryant and Judy Dahlgren.
She was preceded in death by our father Robert W. Micken, her parents Leslie and Thelma Shaw, and her brother Walter Shaw.
