Muriel Steele Obituary
Muriel Madeline Higgins Steele
1919-2014
Muriel Madeline Higgins Steele, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister passed away in Salt Lake City on March 15, 2014.
Muriel was born June 25, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Henry Stanley Higgins and Edythe Ellis Higgins. She Married Max Lorenzo Steele in June 12, 1941. A son, Max Michael, was born in 1943. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple.
In 1949 they undertook a lifetime adventure and challenge; they built and opened their own business, Southeast Pharmacy, in Salt Lake City. For the next 30 years they worked together until they sold the pharmacy and retired in 1978. They enjoyed their retirement, spending most of their free time with their granddaughter, Marissa. They were married for 61 years and amazingly during that time they were never apart for even a single day.
Muriel enjoyed many callings in the L.D.S. Church throughout her life. She served in the Primary, Sunday School, Junior Sunday School and Relief Society. She also actually enjoyed being a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts.
She was blessed to have four grandsons and one granddaughter whom she loved so very much and they, in turn, loved her. Now she has eight great-granddaughters and finally a great-grandson. She adored them all and supported them in many ways.
She is survived by her son, Max Michael Steele (Cathy) and their children: Ryan (Sheri Orullian), their daughters: Madeline (serving a mission in Osorno, Chile), Sydney, Isabelle, Lily, and Cosette; Brett (Ciara Murano) and their daughter, Malina; Jared (Ashley Slatter) and their daughters, Ruthie and Lulajane; Joshua (Mora Nutter) and their son, Jaxon; and Marissa Jane. She is also survived by her brother, Kenneth Higgins (June) of Whittier, California and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Max, her parents, and her sister, Marjorie H. Thomas.
Muriel has lived at Emeritus Care Center for the last 6 ½ years due to a stroke. We express our deep gratitude to all those who lovingly cared for and watched over Muriel, especially Nilsa Gomez and Melissa Peterson. We are also grateful to Miriam Beattie, D.N.P. and Brighton Hospice.
On Saturday, March 22, 2014, family and friends may visit from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, and Graveside services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Drive, at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.larkincares.com.
