Betty May Petersen

1927 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
1927 ~ 2014
I entered this life from the pre-existence July 1, 1927 the third child of six born to George Clarence and Muriel Rausch Petersen. Clarence and Merl were kind, loving, devoted, and hard working parents and we to this day benefit from their hard work. It was a happy day when I passed away into the next world on August 17, 2014 since I will not be in pain anymore.
I attended Granite High and had the honor of being a speaker at the commencement exercise. I am proud to be a "Ute" along with two of my brothers. After graduating I started working in the Registrar's Office at the University of Utah and 34 years later I took an early retirement at which time I was Associate Director of Admissions.
The greatest blessing of my life has been membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I completed a two year mission to Mexico and I love the faithful devoted saints. Also, I had the privilege of, over the years, being the president of Young Women and Relief Society, the secretary to the Stake President and a teacher in Relief Society, Mutual, and Sunday School.
The one talent that I acknowledge is sewing and when people used to ask when I learned to sew I would tell them it must have been in the pre-existence since I can't remember when I didn't sew. When I was young, I entered my 'things' in the county and state fair and won sweepstakes more than once and almost always won 1st prize on my work. This has been a blessing as it has helped me through many a lonely hour and was something I enjoyed and, hopefully, it was enjoyed by those who I shared it with.
For many years I found volunteer work to be something I was drawn to. My favorite project was teaching English as a second language. I remember driving to my first class and wondering what I had gotten myself into this time. Just hope the students learned something and that they enjoyed the class as much as I did. English is a very hard language and you only have to teach to find that out.
I am survived by my brother Vic and his wife Evelyn and they have always gone the extra mile and been very compassionate and helpful with their frequent visits and shopping and whatever I needed. I will be eternally grateful to my sister Renee and her husband Keith Workman for their kindness and help for years. When they had three small children I was welcomed into their home for three months and was totally dependent since it was one of the times I was in a body cast. Then for over fifty years we have been next door neighbors and they have never complained that they do all of the yard work and repairs. And for the last several years they have taken care of my every need and for this reason I have been able to stay in my own home. Is that a blessing or what? I am, also survived by my sister-in-law Vicky Petersen and many nieces and nephews. A nephew Gary has been most helpful with many, many tasks and errands too numerous to list. Annie has come by each week to do my hair, Shannon helps her computer illiterate Grandma and me with our questions and problems, Randy and Sandy let me be involved in some small way with their business, and I am grateful for that. Haley and Kate have cleaned and decorated and many others (too many to mention) have been around to check and help. I was preceded in death by my sister Dorothy Wallberg and my brothers George and Mack.
Also, A special thanks to Rocky Mountain Hospice.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 11 AM at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary chapel located at 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. A visitation will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary on Thursday evening from 7 to 8 PM, as well as one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers I would be pleased if you could contribute to the Humanitarian or the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
