MARD STONE Obituary

Mard Stone 1925 ~ 2009 SCIPIO, UTAH - Our loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend, Marden Joseph Stone, age 84, of Scipio, passed away peacefully in the mountains where he was raised on August 5, 2009. He was born March 31, 1925 in Scipio, a son of George Vernitt and Roxie Esklund Stone. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Reynolds and was honorably discharged to return home to the valley that he loved so dearly. He married Claris Mable Despain, September 12, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Marden worked diligently as a lineman for Utah Power and Light for 33 years in order to support his lifelong dream of ranching on his family homestead. He was a member of the LDS Church. He loved horses, and was an avid riding club member and raced quarter horses all over the western United States. He enjoyed spending time with his family and instilled his knowledge and love of horses in each of his grandchildren. Mard is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Claris Stone of Scipio; his four children: Marlene Bemis of Salt Lake City, LuJean and Chan Memmott, Joseph and Stephanie Stone, all of Scipio; Vickie and Garth Broderick of Riverton; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grand-children; and his sister, Loene Peterson of Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Roxie Stone; his sisters: Neva Gwynn, Wanda Myamoto; his brother, Keith Stone; a grandson, Clint Christensen and a great-granddaughter, Justine Memmott. His family wishes to thank all of the people that gave of their time, love and support. We especially would like to thank the Millard County Sheriff's Department, the people in the town of Scipio, and all the friends and family who searched long into each night to bring Mard home to us. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 12 Noon in the Scipio LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. or Thursday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Fillmore Unit of the Utah National Guard and the Fillmore American Legion Post #61, will be in the Scipio Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah. Marlene, I don't know if you would remember me or not, but we had our appendix out at the same time in the Nephi Hospital when we were teenagers. I haven't seen you since your wedding!!!! I am sorry to hear about your father. I've lost both of my parents in the past 5 years and it's hard, but knowing that they aren't suffering anymore, helps. Please contact me, I'd love to hear from you.

Marden, I only wish we'd gotten to spend more time together, but no one knows how little time we have left. All of the Broderick family (and others, I'm sure) have come away with lessons learned in the days following your death: trust in signs, the value and comfort of prayers, determination and the unwillingness to give up, the value of selflessness, and the desire to help strangers and family when help is needed. We are all inspired by the outpouring of love that went into searching for you, to bring you home and bring peace to your loved ones. In bittersweet irony, you brought us all together and we appreciate each other even more. Thank you Marden. May you rest in peace.

Aunt Claris and family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Uncle Mard was one of a kind. He was truely a gentleman. I used to love watching Uncle Mard get a kick out of something. He had such a mischevious grin and infectious laugh. I will always fondly remember all the times I spent in Scipio with you and the girls. It was some of the best times of my life. Time will ease the pain and memories will fill your hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love,

Kathy Miyamoto

Uncle Mard,
I have let so many years pass me by, but know that you are in my heart. And to the family, my sincere sympathy to all of you during this time. Take comfort in knowing he is in a safe place. I love you all so very much.
