Leonard Cornelius DeJong, age 87, passed away peacefully January 16, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 5, 1924 in Salt Lake City, UT to John DeJong and Magdalina Evertse.
He was drafted into the Army at the age of 17 to serve his country during World War II earning a Purple Heart for his bravery. After returning from the war, he met the love of his life, Emma "Lorraine" Hill who he married October 5, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Together they had six children who he provided, cared for and loved unconditionally. Our Dad was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand because he had a kind and gentle heart.
He loved being around his family doing the things he enjoyed; especially camping and boating. His other hobbies were gardening, carpentry, skeet shooting, tinkering with automobiles and just relaxing in his easy chair.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorraine and sister Jane Jensen. He is survived by his six children Linda (Dennis deceased) Buckner, Janice (LeRoy) Cobia, Marsha Denter, Leonard (Laurie) DeJong, June (Shane) Fuell and Brenda Nordin. Brothers, Martin DeJong, John DeJong and sister, Lena Barney.Also survived by 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Our Dad was an amazing man, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed dearly. He is now with our mother, the love of his life.
We love you Daddy.
A viewing will be held Friday, January 20 at the Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S Highland Drive from 5-7 pm. Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday, January 21 at 10:30 am at the Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 S Memory Lane (1990 E).
