Mary Ann Demke Carlston Obituary
Mary Ann Demke Carlston
3/20/1929 ~ 2/21/2013
Our dedicated mother died peacefully at 83 surrounded by family and friends. Mom was born in Murray, Utah to Franz and Karoline Demke. She grew up in Murray and graduated from Murray High. She attended the University of Utah where she graduated in pharmacology. She was one of three women in her graduating class. She enjoyed working for small independent pharmacies where she was loved by both the patrons and co-workers. She married Earl Rae Carlston on June 22, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. Mom was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings. The Young Women's organization was her favorite where she formed lasting friendships with the girls and leaders she served with. She was a great sport by going on many 4th year hikes with her "less-than-perfect" feet. She recently served in the library and loved working with the women there. Mom loved to travel with her immediate family, her sisters and our dear neighbors and friends. We had many fun adventures and her travels found her in almost every state in America. The most memorable vacation was our trip to Israel to visit the places where Christ walked and taught. Mom loved to make porcelain dolls and really enjoyed this activity every Wednesday for the past 20 years. She was also an avid quilter and made many beautiful quilts which she shared with her family and friends. She loved her beautiful roses and flowers. Mom always took goodies to the elderly people in the ward, so each holiday was spent visiting them and we learned to respect and love those wise older women. Mom loved her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She loved buying them little goodies and was always handing out candy and otter pops. "We will all miss you Mom!"
Mom is survived by her children: Ann (James) Linton and Joy (Regan) Rasband. She leaves behind 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; her sibling, John Demke; and many other nieces, nephews and family members. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; all but one sibling; and her beloved grandson, CJ.
A viewing will be held at Jenkins Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah, Thursday, February 28th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 1, 2013 at 12 Noon at the Eastridge Ward, 1250 East 4800 South, with a viewing at the church prior to services from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery.
