Lorraine Stencel Heden Obituary
Lorraine (Laurie) Stencel Heden
1927 ~ 2013
Laurie enjoyed life to the fullest, always ready to get on an airplane, go camping with her family in the middle of the woods, spend a quiet dinner alone with her husband, dance the next dance, join one more club or play another game of bridge.
Born May 28, 1927 in Elmhurst, IL, she died March 25, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Stencel.
Laurie is survived by her husband Stanley and three loving sons, Douglas (Becky), Jeffrey (Kathy) and Steven, her three grandsons, Gregory, Brogan and Christopher, her brother Dr. John Stencel (Frances) and seven nieces and nephews.
Laurie grew up in Chicago and attended Steinmetz High School where she was a synchronized swimmer, varsity cheerleader and Woman's Sports and Features writer for the school newspaper. She met her future husband at the University of Illinois where she was on the synchronized swimming team and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) sorority. She graduated in June 1949 with a Journalism degree.
Laurie and Stan were married September 10, 1949 in Chicago. They lived in Tucson, AZ, Sydney, Australia, and Richmond, VA before moving to Salt Lake City in 1973. There she was a member of Newcomers Club, Friendship Force, P.E.O., ZTA Alumni, the Reviewer's Club and Zion Lutheran Church. She loved tennis, bridge, reading, and traveling all over the world with her husband.
The entire family wishes to thank Dr. William Nibley and his staff for their care and support during her cancer treatment, the folks at CNS hospice for their comforting care and all her friends whose fellowship and good wishes sustained her throughout.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on April 20, 2013 at 11 a.m. A lunch reception will follow at the church. Remembrances may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Salt Lake or Zion Lutheran Church.
