Maureen Gassman Obituary

Maureen Gassman
1932-2013
Maureen Gassman passed away on May 10, 2013. She was born on May 29, 1932 in Lovell, Wyoming to Walter E. and Alta Thompson Gassman.
After her father's death in March 1936, she moved with her mother and brothers to Ephraim, Utah, where she spent all her growing-up days. After graduation from high school she attended Snow College, where she was graduating valedictorian, and Brigham Young University from which she graduated in 1952. She taught briefly in Cedar City, and then traveled to Hawaii, where she was employed by Dole Pineapple Company from 1955 to 1957. When she returned to the continental United States, she found employment in the offices of Senator Frank Moss and other government agencies in Washington D.C. In 1963 she moved on to New York City to work in the office of The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. During her long employment in New York, her apartment in mid-Manhattan frequently provided accommodations for visiting friends and family. Over the years she spent many vacations traveling throughout the world including tours to South and Central America and most of Europe. Especially during her later years, she would be sure to spend Christmas time with her Utah family. After her retirement she remained in Manhattan until returning to Utah in 2011 to live near her family. She is survived by her brothers Byron (Renee, deceased) and John R. (Merrilin) Gassman and eleven nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by one niece. She is also survived by many lifelong friends.

Britton,

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

May 19, 2013

I have lost a dear and cherished friend from many years past. We shared much in our Washington days and I was so happy for her NY days. I regret that she suffered much during her last years, but know her spirit was strong though her body was not. She spoke often of your great care and help to her, and her gratitude. I regret that I cannot be in Ephraim at this time, but you all are in my thoughts and memories. MehlRee Draper Downard

Maureen and I have been friends for over 30 years. We went to plays, operas, concerts, ballets and movies together. We had season tickets together to the NY Philharmonic. We played Scrabble almost every Sunday. I missed her so much when she left New York. Whenever I go to Salt Lake City I always visit her and I can tell you that even though the Alzheimers was doing a number on her mind, as of October, 2012 she could still beat me at Scrabble. So, my friend, when this life is finished with me, I hope to find you waiting there for that great Scrabble game in the sky!

Affectionately,
Kay Welch
