Dennis Nordfelt Obituary

1943-2014
Dennis J. Nordfelt, 71, peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father on August 30, 2014. He was born March 2, 1943 in Salina, Utah to Charles Junior and Ellen Tolboe Nordfelt. He was raised in Moab, Utah in a home nurtured in warmth and love. In his youth he began to develop his love of the outdoors, which he passed on to his own posterity. He served a mission for the LDS Church to the East Central States Mission. Upon his return, Dennis married his childhood sweetheart, Glenda Carlson, on August 31, 1965, in the Manti Temple.
His chosen profession was in law enforcement with the Utah Highway Patrol and West Valley City Police Department. He also served as Mayor of West Valley City. He was a natural-born and effective leader, which allowed him to contribute to his community in lasting ways. Dennis lifted everyone he met by his kindness and sincere friendship. He was blessed with a great sense of humor and an amazing memory, and was ever-ready with a witty joke, an applicable story, or a heartfelt message. He possessed a magic touch: always leaving people and projects better than when he'd found them. He changed lives. He loved people and people loved him in return.
His professional success was dwarfed by his success as a husband, father and grandfather. His world revolved around his family and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in many church callings and leadership roles, most recently serving with his sweetheart, Glenda, as Hosting Missionaries at the LDS Conference Center. Dennis had faith in the Savior and showed his love for God by serving and loving others.
Dennis is survived by the love of his life, Glenda, and nine grateful children, Dennis (Marcelle), Lars (Jana), Shane (Bonnie), Chris (Mandy), Julie Doherty (Chris), Spencer (Joy), Lantz (Tennisa), Pam Thomas (Shawn), Jed (Cyndi), his thirty-four grandchildren; as well as his siblings, Bonnie Day, Craig (Dixie), Kirtly (Gay), Dana Springer (Norm), MoNene Manzanares (Billy) and SuEllen Denison (Richard). He is preceded in death by his loving parents; and brother-in-law, Larry Day.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at the Jordan North Stake Center, 3900 South 4000 West, West Valley City, Utah. Satellite overflow will be available at the chapel on 4250 South Falcon Street (4145 West). A viewing will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel on Falcon Street and also Saturday before funeral services from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Jordan North Stake Center. Interment, Valley View Cemetery, 4400 West 4100 South, where police honors will be given. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the LDS Temple Patron Assistance Fund.

I worked at WVPD from 1997-2007. I had much respect for your father/grandfather. One little story: one time during the holidays he was in the back of a truck handing out turkeys. (I was a clerk and a kidder) Your father was wearing a turkey decoration on his head. I pointed at him directly and said "I want that turkey!" He just laughed and handed me one of the regular turkeys. I appreciated his reaction.

Once in a while a gospel teaching from Dennis will come to my mind during a PH/ Sunday School discussion or a Sacrament talk. I still can see him in my mind's eye sitting on the stand next to Glenda as she led music. He was a beloved spirtual and community leader as well as a great neighbor and devoted family man. Because of the Atonement and Ressurection of our Savior Jesus Christ, I will see Dennis Nordfelt again in the flesh.

Colonel Dennis Nordfelt was one I would like to be like. Many times his guidance and leadership took me in the right direction. I have a written note from him that he gave me at a UHPA meeting. As I sat down from addressing the group about salary concerns with the legislature. He wrote"You handled that very well, took the powder out of their guns before they could fire." He was just the best Colonel we ever had!

Hello,
I am cannon and dennis was my grandpa and he has been gone for almost one year. When he first passed on I was mad at myself and at my heavenly father for taking him away from me and my family. But I realized how selfish I was being. I also realized that a great work needed to be done in heaven for somebody strong, intelligent, and somebody who loves the gospel. My grandpa was the man for the job. I wish he didn't have to go I still do even now but I am sure he is doing great things in heaven. Thanks for the love and support we needed it

Hi Glenda and the Nordfelt "young'uns" - Oh, how we loved your husband and father (and grandfather). Remembering his missionary days and his sacrifice for our family during those times, and seeing him just 16 short years ago, when he dedicated my mother's grave! Oh, how she loved him, and no doubt, she has found him among his family members. He was like our family as well. We'll always remember Thanksgiving at our home while on his mission, and the 27-pound turkey that we cooked for just him and his companion - we later learned that they did not share it.....ha ha. We always thought that he would be an apostle, because he sat just like President Hinckley - with his tongue hung out just a little.....ha ha. What a terrific missionary he was! And we appreciate the times of reunion in Utah. Thank you, Glenda, for being such a gracious hostess......we didn't even hear a peep from those 9 kiddos while we slept. How well trained they must have been. Oh, we love you all. May we all be together in the hereafter - clean, pure, and holy as we walk into the presence of our Savior and our Heavenly Father, and kneel in humble submission to Them. Thank you Nordfelts for being part of my life! I first knew you in Salina, when Kirtley and I were born days apart, my birthday being the same as Dennis's except for the year. Then I knew your parents and family in Moab. Your son was engaged in my mothers back yard. You passed away, sadly not only on your anniversary but my husbands birthday as well. My nephew is married to Glendas niece Natalie. I loved Ellen and Jr and sister Bonnie. Prayers go out to you! Much Love.

Dennis Nordfelt was a personal friend of our family who we loved and admired greatly. We lived in the same ward where he served as Bishop for years. My Sister was asked to babysit their kids, then they named one of their daughters after her. Dennis gave a marvelous talk at my Dad's funeral and Glenda played for me to sing at my brother's funeral. Dennis was an exceptional individual who cared about others as shown through his service to everyone around him. He has always been one of our favorite people throughout our lives, a hero and an examplar we all looked up to. Undoutedly, the Lord had need of him. We send our love and prayers to you Glenda . . so grateful for our Savior that because of Him, we may be together when we meet again at Jesus feet.

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Dennis Nordfelt for a number of years. Throughout that association I always sensed from him a genuine respect for others and a genuine evidence of integrity in the way he conducted his life. He was a leader trying to find common ground and opportunities where cooperation could unify and better the life of the residents of West Valley City. He was a man of service and a man who worked quietly and successfully to get things done. To Glenda and all of his family members, I extend appreciation that you shared this wonderful man by supporting his public service. God bless you.

September 5, 2014

Glenda and family, so sorry for your loss. Dennis was a great friend and wonderful example. He helped Lyle get hired on with the highway patrol. Some 40 yrs. ago he gave my daughter a priesthood blessing when she was very sick. I am honored to have known such special people. You were always friendly with me whenever we would meet. I am sure Kathryn Burnham was delighted to meet her friend Dennis again. May you be blessed with peace and comfort at this time. Kathy Moffitt

Dennis Nordfelt is a wonderful man. It was a privilege to know him. When he was stake president he jogged to our home late one evening to sign a recommend I needed the next day. Years after his release he was still as friendly as when he was the stake president.

He was my hero is so many ways. As we both grew into men my admiration continued to increase. His great smile has been dear to me for over 60 years. Dennis was a great and loving man !!! For myself "and I am sure many others" Dennis was a bright light in a very dark time in my life !! but Dennis was not content to just be a bright beacon of hope, no Dennis would walk into the darkness, take your hand , let you know he loved you, and lead you out into the light. So heartbroken to hear about President Nordfelt's passing. Growing up with some of his children, and looking up to him as my Stake President for many years, I really admired him. I will always remember him coming with a group of us crazy teenage girls on our "5th year hike" for Young Women's. Dennis exhibited the highest qualities of commitment and integrity in all of his service as an elected official. He was an example of how public service should be carried out as he always had a listening ear and was responsive to the concerns of the people of West Valley City. He was totally dedicated to his family and his faith. Dennis Nordfelt was one of those people who wernt supposed to ever die. His contribution/ life was way to valued.

As a new Mayor 10 years ago, I sought for role models I could strive to emulate to be the best Mayor I could be. There was no better choice than Dennis Nordfelt. He was the perfect example of strength through humility. He had incredible wisdom, but never treated anyone as if they were inferior - even a new Mayor like me. He will be forever a mentor and example. He will be missed terribly. I am a better Mayor and a better person because of his influence and example. He was kind, genuine and a friend to all. If the funeral were held at the conference center it would not hold all the people whose life he touched for good. My condolences and prayers to the family.
