Fred Matley Obituary

1929~2016
Salt Lake City, UT-Fred Stahman Matley peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father, Tuesday February 23, 2016 in the arms of his loving wife Myrna, surrounded by family. Fred was born November 4, 1929 in Lake Arthur, New Mexico just as the Great Depression began. He was the first born of two children to Mark and Kathryn Matley. Fred spent most of his childhood and high school years in Coalville, Utah. In his youth, Fred learned how to work hard on the family farm while valuing the importance of education. He was the high school valedictorian and captain of the football and basketball team. During his youth, Fred became very accomplished in 4-H animal husbandry, raising and showing champion livestock. He won the Grand National Fat Lamb Championship in Denver, 1944. These projects provided the basic funding for his college undergraduate degree. Fred attended Utah State and the graduated from The University of Utah with a degree in business. During his college education, Fred joined the Utah National Guard and was suddenly deployed to Korea. He served and fought valiantly, and was instrumental in saving many lives.
In 1956 Fred and Clair Rasmussen, a great fraternity friend founded Sure Appliance in Salt Lake City. The business and partnership became very successful, allowing him to do that which was most important, spending more time with his wife and family. In 1955 he met the love of his life, Myrna Joy Rasmussen and they were married in the Salt Lake City temple. They loved to travel the world, visiting many countries and cultures. One of his greatest joys and satisfactions was mentoring his three children and nine grandchildren. He spent countless hours of devoted time supporting them in their sporting events, talent performances, and activities. Fred and Myrna were always there!
Fred was very active in the LDS church, serving in many capacities and callings. He had a deep and abiding testimony of the Savior, His life and resurrection. Fred and Myrna served a mission at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. His family loves and adores him and will always look to his great example throughout their lives.
Fred is survived by his wife Myrna Rasmussen, daughters Mindy Matley Pitcher, Mitzi Matley Krantz, son Mark Matley, nine grandchildren, and sister Joyce Matley Wood.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 29th at 12PM at the Fortuna Way LDS Chapel, 4407 S. Fortuna Way (3695 East), Salt Lake City, Ut. Dear Myrna and family,
So sorry that we just heard of Fred's passing yesterday on our news letter that we receive here in St George.
Fred was a beautiful human being and we have long commented on how devoted he was to all of you. You were his jewels and he loved you all so very much. We always considered Fred to be a kind and gentle man, and we were so honored to have him call us our friends.
May you be comforted by your faith, and the wonderful family you have raised together.
Our love goes to all of you.

I am sorry to hear of Fred's passing. It is hard when a spouse, brother, or parent dies. The obituary is very nice, and I like seeing the young picture as well as a recent one.
We all are fortunate to have known him.
Bless you all.
