Vaughan Mitchell Obituary

MITCHELL
Vaughan Mitchell died February 16, 2013, at the age of 78. He was a graduate of Alamo Heights High School and the University of Texas at Austin, later earning a Master's degree in Urban Planning from UTSA. Vaughan was a native San Antonian and spent his career in the fields of construction and real estate. His special interest was in the revitalization of downtown San Antonio as a residential center, and he developed the first downtown condominium project on the San Antonio River. The story of Vaughan's life is inseparable from that of Sally, his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years. They lived in a series of homes in the Alamo Heights area where Vaughan was raised, each of which they designed or remodeled together. In 1995 a shared love of the ocean led them to Aransas Pass, Texas, where they spent the next seven years living on their boat and cruising the Gulf coast. In later years as Vaughan's health declined, they shifted their residence back to San Antonio where they were surrounded by their many wonderful and supportive friends. Vaughan will be remembered by all who knew him as a person of integrity, generosity, and dry wit. He is survived by his wife, Sally; son, Scott Mitchell and wife, Linda of San Antonio; daughter, Melissa Connell and husband, Richard of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; grandson, Ensign Joshua Connell and granddaughter, Katheryn Connell.

I will always cherish the memories of Vaughan's family fruitcake recipe and all the years we shared our tinkerings and tastes with it. A fun guy, smart, witty and unforgettable.

Regrettably, I never met Vaughan. But if his son, Scott, is a chip from that block, then Vaughan must have been an exceptional being. I know he will be missed by my friends, Scott and Linda Mitchell and I send them tons of love.

Vaughan was such a wonderful person who loved life . It was such a pleasure to see him be so enthusiastic about his many interests. He and Sally together had such great adventures. He lived a full life, with much more vitality than most people. No regrets in his good life, except that he left us all too soon. We will always remember him with much affection.
