Arnold Gus Rose
Retired Terrell Hills Fire Chief Arnold Rose passed away peacefully on August 9, 2014 at the age of 82.
Arnold was born November 22, 1931 to parents Gustav Ludwig Rose and Maria Louise (Schulze) Rose in New Braunfels, Texas. He met and married Elizabeth Schertz on January 18, 1952. They lived in New Braunfels where they started their family and then moved to San Antonio in 1958. They raised four children in their home on Thoraine before building a home on 14 acres off Highway 281 near Spring Branch. They returned to San Antonio to spend they remainder of their lives near family, friends, and grandchildren.
Arnold had a career in firefighting which spanned 42 years of service. It started with the New Braunfels Fire Department where he worked for three years. He was hired with Terrell Hills Fire Department on November 21, 1957 and retired as Fire Chief on December 31, 1996. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard of Texas in 1958 after completion of his enlistment.
Arnold enjoyed fishing and hunting whenever possible. He refinished furniture and painted houses in his off time. When he was not outside, he loved watching sports on TV especially the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.
Arnold is survived by his wife of 62 years Elizabeth (Schertz) Rose, son Steven Rose and wife Sherrie (Pargmann) Rose, daughter Diane Rose, son Michael Rose, and daughter Lisa (Rose) Wieding and husband Robert Wieding. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday August 14 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Alamo City Chapel, 6500 IH 35 North 78218.
Funeral service will be held on Friday August 15 at 11:30 AM at Mount Calvary Church, 308 Mt. Calvary Dr. 78209 with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Donations can be made to www.100ClubSA.org or Mount Calvary Church.
