Berry English

Berry English, 86, of Austin, Texas and Fredericksburg, Virginia, retired Civil Engineer with Texas Department of Transportation, died Friday, October 11, in a single-car accident as he drove between his 68th high school reunion in San Antonio and a fall campout at Blanco State Park, with camping friends from First Baptist Church, Austin, Texas.

Berry was born February 6, 1927, in Bexar County, Texas. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas; graduating from San Antonio Vocational and Technical High School in 1945; he served in the US Navy before studying at The University of Texas at Austin. Graduating in 1952, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, he began working for the Texas Highway Department. Berry married Jean Sowell English on August 22, 1953 at the First Baptist Church of Austin, Texas. Berry served the Texas Highway Department for 38 years before retiring in 1990 as the Director of Bridge Construction.

Berry was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, a Life Member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and was an active member, deacon, former deacon chair, and former children's Sunday School Teacher of First Baptist Church of Austin, Texas from 1953 until 2012 when he moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia and joined Fredericksburg Baptist Church. He enjoyed family gatherings, camping, photography, and telling great stories. Berry was a devoted husband, parent, grandparent and in July welcomed a great granddaughter to this world, with much joy and blessing!

Berry English was preceded in death by his mother, Susie Rosenkranz; his brother, George Rosenkranz; and by his son, Glen English. He is survived by his wife, Jean English; daughters, Jacque English (Mike Morrison) and Patti English, and daughter-in-law, Nancy English. Berry is also survived by grandchildren: Brandon Williamson (Toi and children, Darrin and Lindsey), Justin Williamson (Chrissy), Alissa English and Seth English; and great-granddaughter, Mia Williamson.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Berry English will be held at First Baptist Church, Austin, Texas, on Monday, November 4, at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Roger Paynter and Rev. Don Searles presiding.
