Charles Francis Schermerhorn Sr. passed away from natural causes on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at his home in San Antonio, TX. at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Irwin Schermerhorn and Anna Malloy Schermerhorn and infant daughter Elizabeth Marie. He is survived by his wife Dona Dear Schermerhorn, daughter Patricia Ann Schermerhorn and son Charles F. Schermerhorn Jr., granddaughters Jordan and Rainy Schermerhorn, former daughter in law Jana Powell Schermerhorn, and close family friend Stacey Robinson all residing in San Antonio, TX. A sister, Anna Schermerhorn-Cochran, of Lakeside Calif. and numerous nieces and nephews in Calif. and Kentucky, Alabama and Florida . A military and Masonic funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 12th 2013 at 10:45 am at the National Cemetery, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX.
Chuck was born in New York City, served twice in the U.S. Army as a Military Police officer where he met the love of his life, Dona L. Dear and were soon married in the Canal Zone. He graduated from Florida State University with a BS in Criminology and attended Nova Southeastern University for graduate school, majoring in criminology and sociology. Chuck was a Canal Zone Police Officer and later transferred to U S Customs, serving in Texas and Arkansas. Chuck was devoted to his God, Country, family and community. He coached Little League Baseball for many years, was a scout leader, Past Master of Army Lodge AF&AM, York Rite, Scottish Rite and Abou Saad Shrine Temple. He is currently a member of the American Legion Post 593 and Charles W Anderson 1413 Masonic Lodge. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. I love you more today than yesterday but less than tomorrow.
