Evangelina Bazan

Evangelina Ximénez Bazán died at home on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born in Hebbronville, Texas, on January 20, 1927, to Virginia and Fernando Ximénez. Evangelina attended elementary school at Colegio Altamirano and graduated from Hebbronville High School. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry at the University of Texas where she met her husband Carlos Bazán, Jr., whom she married in 1947. Later she taught biochemistry to nursing students at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

She loved her husband and family above all and delighted in her children and grandchildren. Through her children, she observed that she went back to school many, many times. She enjoyed many loyal, longtime friends, in particular the "Alba Club," a group from her UT years, and "The Ladies 12." Vangie, curious about many things, was a lifelong learner with many interests. In addition, working in her yard and garden gave her great joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carlos Bazán, Jr., M.D. and her sisters, Josefina X. Hernandez and Gloria X. Gregory. She is survived by her children: Carlos Bazan III, MD, and wife Martha; Margot B. Rodriguez, MD, and husband Richard; Belinda Bazán-Lara and husband Joe; Evangelina Bazán X. and partner Susan Klein; and Fernando Bazan, MD, and wife Mary; granddaughters Sara B. Elizondo (Eric), Claire Rodriguez, Rebecca Bazan, Lauren Rodriguez, Anna B. Sorrells (David), Angela Bazan, Iliana Bazán, and Vanessa Bazan. She is also survived by her sisters Maria de Los Santos X. Guerra and Jean de la Zerda as well as nieces and nephews, Virginia, Roddy, Larry, Anna Maria, Mano, Marina, Fernando, Annie, Gabriela, Pepe, Alejandra, and Marcela. Her loving kitty Christina survives her and misses her.

The family of Evangelina Bazán is profoundly grateful for the tender and loving care provided by her caregivers Rosa Salazar, Gabriela Valdez, Yolanda Meza, and Norma Meza. The family also thanks Dr. John Rodriguez, Dr. Joseph Boyle, and Liz Borrego for their care.
