Frances Finuf

Frances Tylene Mattingly was born March 22, 1928, third daughter of James and Nelly Mattingly in Cloverport, KY. She accomplished much in her life because she had spirit and a desire to see the world. She was the daughter of a sharecropper and a homemaker and she knew early on that she wanted to see more than the farm. She graduated from high school in Barberton, Ohio, and later she applied for and was accepted to become a secretary for the military in Japan when she 23. So having no experience with worldwide travel, or other cultures, she boarded a plane to Japan and worked there from 1951-1953. While there, she met Don Carlos Culley. They were later married in Kentucky, December 28, 1953. They had 2 children, Mary N. Culley and Stephen J. Culley. She furthered her travels, as Don was military, spending time in Maryland, Colorado, Germany, and Texas. While in Texas, Frances worked for immigration and naturalization as a secretary. Don died in 1973 and Frances later married John Swarberg and moved to Pacific Beach, California, where she began her second career in apartment management. They were married 5 years before he died from cancer. Frances continued to work in apartment management until the age of 72 when she met and married Wilfrid Finuf and moved with him to San Antonio. She made many friends, was founding members of the Shrine of St. Padre Pio Church, and lived in San Antonio until she died on August 6, 2013 at the age of 85 when a very long battle with cancer finally won. We love and miss her very much. She was always quick to laugh and loving an adventure. She is survived by her husband, Wilfrid Finuf, and his family consisting of a daughter, Kathy, a son, Jerry and their families. She is also survived by her daughter, Mary, and her husband, John Nelson, and her son, Stephen and his wife, Tracy. She had four natural grandchildren, Tylene, Darien, James, and Aaron, plus seven more grandchildren of the heart, Milly, John Edward, Margie, Candice, Andrew, Tony, and Matt. She also had a total of nine great-grandchildren, Brianna, Jacob, Travis, Roland, Hailey, Luke, Jack, Levi, and Dexter. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her sisters, Isabel and Mildred, her two brothers who died in infancy, and two previous husbands.
