Guy Monroe Covington, Lt. Col. U.S. Army
(Retired), age 88, entered into eternal rest on October 25, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born April 6, 1925 in Lubbock, Texas to Thomas Monroe and Euna Maurine Covington. He was a dutiful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. In 1942, he married Marie Williams; they were happily married for 59 years until her death in 2001. In 2003, he married Edith Richardson, his devoted wife of the past 10 years.
He proudly served his country for two years in the U.S. Navy
, followed by 23 years in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he was distinguished with the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star
, the Senior Army Aviation Badge and the Army Commendation Medal. He was also recognized during his career with the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, he worked for fifteen years in the Life Insurance Division of USAA where he was honored for the distinction of contracting the first one million dollar life insurance policy.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gerald; daughter-in-law, Marilyn; and siblings Harold, Bobby, Billy, Nelda, Bonnie and Patsy.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Covington, and his daughters, Lisa Hamm (Chuck) and Kimberly Covington. Also surviving are stepdaughters Janet Garrett (David), Chris DeVos (Wim) and Sally Gardner (Don); 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Alamo Heights Christian Church, 6435 N. New Braunfels, San Antonio, TX 78209 on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alamo Heights Christian Church.
