Herbert Barsch

BARSCH
Herbert Alvin Barsch, 83, transitioned on Apr. 13, 2013 from natural causes. He was also known as Sonny by his family and Herb by his friends and colleagues. He went to his transition just as he lived his life, on his own terms and with will and courage. He passed peacefully knowing that he would soon be with the Lord and his beloved Ada Lavanda. He missed her greatly during the last several years after her transition. He was born July 24, 1929 in Gillespie County, Texas to Charles F. Barsch and Lydia Duecker Barsch. He grew up on the family farm before moving to San Antonio. He graduated high school from Fox Tech and joined the Air Force shortly after where he served honorably in the Korean War. He served his country again in the US Civil Service at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. He married in 1953 to Charlotte Jesse Harris and had three sons, Gary, James and Fred. He married Ada Lavanda Crews in 1959 and had two children, Donald and Susan. Ada was the true love of his life and they experienced 48 years of marriage together. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Augusta Hall and Margarete Gutherie, Ada and Charlotte. He is survived by his children, his sister Lina Kuhlmann and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his beloved Pete Garcia Jr. who was like another son. He was a fantastic storyteller that really loved to be with people. He loved to barbeque and a good party was never far from his experience. He was the Texas state men's tennis champion while in high school, when he wasn't sneaking off to play football. He loved to hunt and fish in his younger days. He was a champion shuffle board player and very tough on a pool table or at a game of darts. He loved the rural life and that is where he spent the last years of his life. A memorial service will be held at Oak Island United Methodist Church, 2970 DeVilbiss Lane, San Antonio, TX 78264 on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 4:00PM. As Herb requested, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the church.
