February 22nd 2014

Loving father, grandfather and brother, James W. Kimbrell, Sr., went to be with his Lord and Savior during the afternoon hours of February 22nd 2014. He passed away at the home of his daughter and son in law, Kathy and Dan Thaler of Bandera. James was born to Ethel Forest Holt and William Brown Kimbrell of San Antonio. He attended school in South San Antonio where he met his high school sweetheart Betty Jo Fryar. They were married in 1956 and were about to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary when Betty was called to be with her Lord last fall. James was a long time resident of Bandera, Texas where he was retired. James enjoyed retiring from two different lifelong careers and passions; the Air Force and Law Enforcement. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1956 where he honorably served for 21 years. His military service took him to stations all over the world and where he witnessed many of the important conflicts and near conflicts on the global stage. He was a Viet Nam veteran and served on two tours of duty in that theatre. He was a jet fighter mechanic, Crew Chief/Tech Sergeant and ultimately was an inspector for quality maintenance inspections, on many flight lines across the country. Upon retiring from the Air Force, "Jim" embarked on his second career in Law Enforcement. He worked in the Terrell Hills PD as a patrol officer and then as a Patrol Sergeant in Castle Hills. He served in Bandera PD as Sergeant, Lieutenant and then Chief Deputy. He retired in 2001 as Deputy Commander of the Narcotics Division Task Force in Kerrville.
James was a member of the VFW, Masons where he achieved 37th degree Scottish Rite and the Alazafar Shriners. James and Betty loved to travel and they made many RV trips to Alaska, Canada and all over the western and northwestern United States. In addition, James was a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast and owned and rode motorcycles all of his life. He and Betty also made extensive trips during their retirement years. Their greatest joy was of course their extended and loving family. His son, James W. Kimbrell, Jr. of Bandera and his wife Cherry, and his daughter Katherine E. Thaler and her husband Daniel Thaler also of Bandera survive James Sr. Surviving siblings include Jean R. Kutzer of Castroville and Belden F. McPike of Houston. James leaves 5 loving grandchildren; Danny Thaler of Boerne, Amanda Popham of Bandera, Savanah Thaler of Lubbock, Nathaniel Thaler of Bandera and Misty Kimbrell of Austin. James was blessed with 4 great grandchildren, Landon and Connor Popham, and Case and Cayleigh Thaler, all of Bandera.
