Mary Burdett Arnold passed away on Friday, June 14, 2013 in San Antonio, Texas. Mary was born in Falfurrias, Texas on June 8, 1922. She graduated from high school in May, 1939 and continued her education at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where she graduated in May, 1943. On November 24, 1943 she was married to her college sweetheart, Bill Arnold, at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary Chapel. While Bill served as student pastor at Hyde Park Presbyterian Church in Austin, Mary was employed as Assistant to the President of the Texas Union on the University of Texas
campus. Mary happily accompanied her "tall man of God" as he served as pastor in San Saba, Houston, McAllen, San Antonio, and Taylor in Texas, and later as Interim Pastor in Colorado at Golden and Arvada.
At each stop Mary found herself singing in the choir, leading Presbyterian Women of the Church Circles and teaching Sunday school and, when needed, standing in as "church secretary." While managing (budgeting, feeding, and clothing a family of six on a "preacher's salary") she was able to keep a sense of humor; a faith people could readily see and the time to encourage every person she came in contact with. She had a sense of humor and always "lifted your spirit" with her encouragement and joy in living for her God.
Forsaking retirement Bill and Mary returned to Texas when he became pastor of Burnet Presbyterian Church and later as Interim Pastor and eventually Parish Associate at San Pedro Presbyterian Church before his death in February of 1995. Mary and Bill were parents of four (4) sons: John, Jim, David and Mark. Mary was blessed by fifty-one (51) years of marriage to her "tall man of God" and four (4) sons, by good health, and the spiritual inspiration of the Christians with whom she was associated all of her life. Her favorite quote: "God is so good to me."
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Bill Arnold; her son Mark; her parents Sharlotte and George V. Holmes and Clifford Burdett. She is survived by her sister, Anna Davis; sons John, Jimmy and wife Patty, David and wife Marcia, and her son Matt; daughter-in-law Peggy; her grandchildren Chris and his wife Cindy, Kari, Jordan and Joshua; her great-grandchildren Rachel, Reece and Addie; and nieces Diana Robertson, Tomi Gay Dawson, Jill Davis; and nephew Chip Davis.
The family wishes to especially thank the staff and "medical team" at Independence Hill and the nurses and "crisis team" from Odyssey Hospice for their wonderful care, concern and nurture.
