Minerva Cortez

Minerva Cortez, went into the loving arms of the Lord with her family by her side on November 27, 2013, at the age of 65. . She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Pete, her parents Feliciano and Adelina Veliz and sister Natalia Oviedo. "Minnie" as she was known to everyone, was born on May 5, 1948 in San Antonio. She lived a fulfilling and meaningful life, being active with her three greatest loves; her family, her faith and her friends. A 2006 diagnosis of breast cancer and a short lived remission starting in 2007 was only a preview to everyone of how strong of a woman she was. In 2012 her faith and desire to beat cancer yet again gave everyone around her the strength they needed for the journey to come. Time and time again, she amazed everyone with her perseverance and will to keep going. "She is such a strong woman" was the observation and comment made by every person involved with her care. With just hours left she continued to amaze everyone, medical staff included with her strength and determination.
Minnie is survived by her son Steve his wife Jennifer, daughter Debbie her husband David, son Chris, and daughter Kim and Jesse Arguello. One of her greatest joys were her grandchildren: Ashley, Jacob, Josh, Samantha, Lauren, Alyssa, Brianna and Zack, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by siblings Frances Galaviz (Pete) Gloria Calvillo (Albert), Feliciano Veliz, Jr. (Grace), Ray Veliz (Aurora), Mary Lou De Leon (John), Arturo Veliz, Roy Velez (Irene), brother in law Roland Oviedo, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Her passion for life will be sorely missed and never forgotten by all those who knew and loved her. Visitation will begin on Tuesday December 3, 2013 at 1pm, with a rosary to be held at 7pm, a prayer to follow. A funeral service will be held Wednesday December 4, 2013 at 9am at Castillo Mission Funeral Home with interment to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Services under the direction of Castillo Mission Funeral Home.
