Dr. Robert Lira Jr., age 69, of San Antonio, passed away peacefully at his home on October 7, 2013. Robert was a loving father and devoted husband whose passion for medicine was clear to all who knew him. With a particular love for the elderly, Robert served as medical director for San Antonio nursing homes and hospice programs since his practice began in 1980. God graced Robert with a servant's heart and his family was blessed to have him as a role model for service to others. His gift of time and talent was freely given over the years to medical and service organizations such as the Prospect Hill Baptist Free Clinic, Boysville, the Harlandale School District student sports program, as well as the Baptist Health System, Southwest General and Promise Hospital.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, Robert attended Breckenridge High School and graduated with the class of 1961. He then graduated from the University of Texas
with a degree in Pharmacy and went on to complete medical school at the University Autonoma of Guadalajara and completed his Fellowship in graduate training in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Robert returned to San Antonio in 1980, and within a few years he had established his solo practice in the Circle Pharmacy on Nogalitos and Zarzamora Street. Over the years, Robert was invited to join other group practices, but he so enjoyed serving the south side of San Antonio where he had spent time with his grandmother while growing up, that he would not consider leaving the patients and neighborhood culture that he appreciated.
When he was not practicing medicine, Robert played golf, or "played at it" as he used to say. His friendships enhanced by a good cigar and discussion of the Dallas Cowboys brought him such great pleasure! Robert is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Celeste, and children Christopher and Megan. He was so proud of all their accomplishments and achievements. Robert is also survived by his siblings Belinda, James (Jim), Arlene and his adult children, Lance and Robert III, along with many nieces, nephews and supportive loving friends. A special thanks to his healthcare providers at START Cancer Center for their encouragement and family support: Dr. Ronald Drengler, Gail and Josh.
