ROBERT LEE (R.L.) SANDERS
R.L. Sanders, age 89, of San Antonio, died January 7, 2013. R.L. was born on a farm near Anson, Texas on April 7, 1923. He graduated from Anson High School and received a bachelor's degree from Abilene Christian University. He served as an officer in the Navy on the destroyer escort U.S.S. Gillette during World War II
in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. After the war R.L. received his MBA from The University of Texas
at Austin. He went to work for Arthur Andersen & Company, where he became a partner, working in Andersen's Houston, Paris (France), and San Antonio offices. After 36 years R.L. retired from Andersen and was an adjunct professor at Trinity University. He also did volunteer work with numerous charitable organizations in San Antonio. Retirement also allowed R.L. and Shirley to travel, both for pleasure and for mission work. They spent 15 months in Vienna, Austria working with the Eastern European Mission program. R.L. also loved time with his family at his vacation home on Lake LBJ where he hosted many guests over the years. R.L. served for many years as an elder and Bible class teacher at Central Church of Christ in Houston and later at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ in San Antonio. He also served as a Board member at Abilene Christian University for several years. R.L. was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean (Martin) in 1974, his parents Tula & Irvin Sanders, and his older brother Irvin Carlton Sanders in 2008. He is survived by his wife Shirley (Mays); sister Marjorie Bourland; daughter Laura Otey and husband Bob (Sunrise Beach); son Steve Sanders (Steamboat Springs/Red River); daughter Lisa Higgason and husband Steve (Dallas); stepson Scott Mays and his wife Cheri (Tulsa); stepdaughter Sandy Hood and husband John (Georgetown); stepson Jon Mays and wife Amanda (San Antonio); grandchildren Stephanie, Cory, and Cassidy Sanders, Caitlin and Brock Higgason, step-grandchildren Aaron Mays (Julie), Lauren Mays, Leighton Mays, Robb Otey, Matt Otey, and Kirstin Otey Lewis. R.L. is also survived by his numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
