Rupert Thorp

Rupert Edwin Thorp passed away Tuesday April 16, 2013. He was 89.
Born in Temple, Texas on October 6, 1924 to parents Rupert E. Thorp Sr. and Zelma Gower, Rupert joined the United States Marine Corps in December of 1942, a little more than a year after the attack at Pearl Harbor. As a Marine Air Wing mechanic and troubleshooter, Rupert survived the rigors of war in the Pacific. He returned home to Texas in 1945 where he married the love of his life, Bettye Jeanne Winslow, some two weeks after his return from WWII.
For the next 60 years, Rupert and Bettye traveled the world, visiting destinations in China, Western Europe, Russia and the Pacific.
Later in life, Rupert dedicated his time volunteerism, having 54 years of perfect attendance as a Senior Rotarian with the Alamo Heights Rotary Club.
Rupert is survived by his daughter, Jeannette Reaves, and his two sons, Richard and David Thorp, grandchildren Regina Reaves Manfredi, Reagan Reaves, Angela Wells Wolf, Clay Thorp, Clint Thorp, Cole Thorp and Tara Garcia, and great grandchildren Jackson Jernigan, Jensen Jernigan, Cameron Wolf, Jordan Garcia, Camren Garcia, and Kody Garcia.
Services will be held Friday April 26, at the First United Methodist Church, 572 W. San Antonio St, New Braunfels, TX at 11:00am with internment at the Fort Sam Houston Cemetery at 1:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, Rupert's friends and family ask donations be sent to the Bexar County Food Bank or Alamo Heights Rotary Club - Rotary Foundation Fund.
