William Cook

COOK
Lieutenant Colonel William B. "Bill" Cook, Jr. USA, (Retired) passed away peacefully on September 30, 2013 at home in the Army Residence Community in San Antonio at the age of 90. Bill was born on May 15, 1923 in Canton, Ohio, to LTC William Byron and Geneva Bonom Cook. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, and was commissioned into the Finance Corps in 1943. Bill retired from the Army in 1963, after postings throughout the U.S. and tours in England, Germany, Trieste, and Korea. He graduated from the University of Maryland, and earned a Masters of Education degree from Trinity University. After active service, Bill was a teacher and counselor at MacArthur High School, and retired in 1988 from civil service from the Academy of Health Sciences, Fort Sam Houston. Bill was active in the Windcrest United Methodist Church, the Windcrest Golf Club, and the ARC Golden K Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed woodworking, and was an accomplished watercolor painter, with many of his inspirations drawn from his vacation travels around the world. Bill was predeceased by his wives Bette J. Cook and Kathleen A. Cook. He is survived by his wife, Shirley D. Cook; daughters, Carol A. Cook and Bette L. Polishak; stepsons, COL (Ret) Gordon S. Vincent, MD and wife, Cate of Temple, Texas, COL (Ret) Mark Vincent and wife, Nancy of Katy, Texas, COL (Ret) Dale Vincent, MD and wife, COL (Ret) Judy Vincent, MD, of Kialua, Hawaii; stepdaughter Leslie J. Simich and husband, Barry of Carmel, Indiana; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
