Former Executive Editor and Vice President, News of the San Antonio Express-News, Willis James (Jim) Moss, age 77, of Comfort, TX, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013. He was born in Seguin, TX, on August 21, 1935, to Emil and Alma Moss. In 1961, he married Adele Willmann Moss of Seguin and they had two children, Merrily Moss and Michael Moss.
He attended the Dowdy School in Darst Creek Oil Field and then graduated from Seguin High School in 1954. He went on to earn a teaching certificate from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos with a minor in journalism. He took a job with Galveston Times and had "ink under his fingernails" from that time on. He began working for the Seguin Enterprise and then came to the San Antonio Express-News during Hemisfair in 1968. He served as a reporter
, then copy editor and retired in 1997.
Jim loved to camp with his family and friends. Later in life, he traveled to Switzerland, Turkey, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Israel and Jordan.
While living in San Antonio, he was active at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church serving as an elder and teaching Sunday School.
In 1999, he and Adele moved to Comfort where he raised registered Longhorn cattle. In Comfort, he was active as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Comfort Baptist Church, was president of the Comfort Chamber of Commerce and president of the Comfort Area Foundation, and loved delivering Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Adele; his daughter, Merrily Moss of Dallas; his son and wife, Michael and Tina Moss of Flower Mound; his grandson and wife, Joshua and Kaitlyn Moss of Comfort; granddaughters, Christa Moss currently serving in the Air Force and stationed at Eglin AFB; Kayla Moss attending Kings University; Kendra Moss attending Hardin Simmons University; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Moss of Cayce, SC and a brother-in-law, Robert Willmann of San Diego, CA.
Funeral services are scheduled at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in San Antonio at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, with a visitation at 10 a.m. at the church. A visitation will be held in Comfort at the Comfort Baptist Church from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, February 18.
