Josephine Agather Obituary

Josephine Fifi O'Connor Agather went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 22nd. She was preceded in death by her husband, of sixty years Victor Agather and her daughter, Merrilee Agather Cathcart. She was born in Garden City, New York on December 16, 1919 to Judge Eugene F. O'Connor and Merrilee D. O'Connor. She attended St. Mary's School and Sarah Lawrence College. She is survived by Anne and Dr. Francisco C‡rdenas; Neils and Elaine Agather; John and Ruth Agather; seven grandchildren: Hudson Fuller, John and Leslie C‡rdenas, Bradley and Lorene Agather; Jack and Merrilee Agather. She was married in 1940 and moved to Washington D.C. where her husband was stationed. After WWII, she and Victor moved back to Garden City and gave birth to their first daughter, Merrilee. Shortly after, she and Victor moved to Mexico City where they remained for forty-eight years. Anne, Neils, and John were born and raised in Mexico City. She spent the last thirteen years in San Antonio. She led a long life, rich in experiences which included meeting Charles Lindbergh at the Spirit of St. Louis the night before his flight to Paris, the Beatles on the night of their appearance after they had performed on the Ed Sullivan Show, and the Apollo 11 astronauts, six weeks after their walk on the moon. All who knew her were recipients of her incredible loving nature. She was extremely well read, performed every crossword puzzle she could get a hold of, was known for her wit, sharp intellect, and sense of fairness. The last airworthy B-29 Superfortress is named FIFI in honor of her. We both lost a dear and precious friend and confidant when we lost Fifi. We'll forever miss her cheerful voice, her never-ending words of encouragement and unconditional love.
