Alberto Mijangos Obituary

After spending Father's Day with his five children and their families, Alberto Mijangos, artist and teacher, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2007 with his wife at his side. A true visionary and someone who delighted in thinking of the possibilities, Alberto spent his last months drawing, visiting his studio and his beloved students and planning future projects and exhibitions. He loved working and constantly spoke of his spark. As long as I have my spark, I will continue creating! Alberto was born in Mexico City in 1925 and had a life full of accomplishments. He was the founding director of the Institute de Mexico where he worked for 13 years, had two different restaurants in Oaxaca, Mexico and San Antonio and painted and taught art for most of his life. He received many awards and showed in museums and galleries across the United States and Latin America. Alberto loved sharing what he had learned. He did this with his art, but also for the 28 years he was in AA. It seems that many who came in contact with Alberto felt their lives had been changed. He felt that it was God who gave him the beautiful ability to encourage and inspire. Alberto was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bryant Kirk. Alberto leaves behind his wife, Kay, daughter, Laura Kirk, his son Albert Mijangos and wife Cheryl, his daughter, Renee Mijangos and husband Rafael Monzon, his son Mario Mijangos and wife Lisa and his daughter Isabel Mijangos and husband Brian Korte; his grandsons, Christopher Delgado, Ryan Kirk, Dylan Kirk, Paolo Mijangos, Diego Monzon and Griffin Korte and his granddaughters, Eliana Mijangos, Katalina Mijangos, Marina Monzon, Isabella Monzon, Sofia Mijangos, Gabrielle Korte and Olivia Korte. He is also survived by his sisters, Maria and Isabel in Mexico, and his brother-in-law Basil Karcher. Alberto also had very close relationships with many of his students, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed. MEMORIAL SERVICE SATURDAY JUNE 23, 2007 2:00 P.M. ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH 315 E. PECAN The Rev. Michael Chalk, The Rev. Mary Earle, The Rev. Doug Earle and The Rev. Alberto was my greatest inspiration in art. He was a gifted teacher and mentor. He was able to bring out the best in his students' art with his vision and loving personality. His creativity inspired creativity in his students. We will miss his wit and wisdom but his legacy will live on in us.
