Henry Radi Obituary

RADI
Col. Henry L. Radi died September 30th, 2010, in San Antonio, at age 94. Henry was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 9, 1916. He was the son of Anna Ragnetti Radi and Joseph Radi. Henry grew up in Chicago and attended Lane Technical High School, serving as vice president of his graduating class. He attended his beloved University of Illinois and graduated in chemical engineering in 1938. Henry was an active member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and ROTC, Reserve Officer Training Corps. After graduation he began his military career as a Company Commander in the Civilian Conservation Corps, "Roosevelt's Tree Army," in Northern Wisconsin. There he met and married his beloved wife, Claire, beginning a beautiful 70 year romance. In 1942 he was called to active duty in the United States Army and proudly served in the European Theater of Operations in the 281st Field Artillery Battalion III Corps. From 1947 to his retirement in 1981 he served the army in civilian capacities, including Civilian Personnel Officer at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, Fort Shafter, Hawaii and Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He continued his lifelong military career as a reserve officer, and retired in 1976 with the rank of Colonel. In his retirement he enjoyed horsemanship, participating in many community and military organizations, repairing his own cars, reading Louis L'Amour books, collecting friends wherever he went and showering love on his family and his horse, Dawn. Hank will be missed by all. Henry is survived by his widow, Claire Acker Radi, born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin; two daughters, Cynthia Camp, a retired retail executive in Long Beach, California (married to John Camp); Mavis Bates, an acupuncturist in Aurora, Illinois (married to John Koranek); a son, Mark Radi, an environmental engineer, in Savoy, Illinois (married to Maureen Radi); his sister, Josephine Olin, of Morton Grove, Illinois; four granddaughters, Madrid Bates Kaufmann, Dr. Deneb Bates, Elizabeth Radi, and Christina Radi; and his grandniece, Amanda Craig. The family will hold a private ceremony with Father John Wagener celebrating the Committal Rites at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
