James Gutierrez Obituary
James Eli Gutierrez, age 59, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 8th. He was born in San Antonio to John and Amelia Gutierrez on November 26, 1955. James and his brother, John Gerard grew up in the Loma Park neighborhood located on the west side of the city. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School, then Holy Cross of San Antonio, where he played varsity football for the Knights. James worked at United Parcel Service for 39 years; the last 20 years were for the UPS Air Division. James married Marcella Cano in 1981 and enjoyed a happy family life together for 34 years. James was a hard working, quiet man who enjoyed the peaceful setting of living in Boerne, Texas. James is preceded in death by his parents John and Amelia Gutierrez and his brother, John Gerard (Holy Cross c/o '71). He is survived by his wife Marcella, sons: John Matthew (Holy Cross c/o '06) Phillip James (Holy Cross c/o '08) and Andrew Jared (Holy Cross c/o '18), parents-in-law, Andrew and Maria Cano, sisters- in-law: Sabina P. Gutierrez, Cynthia C. Thomas and husband C.R., Magda C. Gonzalez, Theresa Cano Arroyo and husband Keith; cousin Henry Garcia and wife Diane Elizabeth; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held at 5 pm on Sunday, November 15th at Porter Loring on McCullough followed by a Rosary at 7 pm. Mass will be held at St. Luke's Catholic Church on Monday, November 16th at 2 pm. Honorary Pall bearers will be his Holy Cross 'Brothers'- Class of 1974. James was dedicated to his alumni school. Our family wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Holy Cross of San Antonio in James' honor. You are invited to sign the Guestbook at www.porterloring.com

My condolences for the family of Jimmy Gutierrez. Jimmy was my cousin. I remember as children playing football along with my brothers with Jimmy and Johnny when my parents would visit their parents. Praying for God's peace and comfort during this time of loss.

A true testament of the fine person James was is by the outpouring support his family received at the Rosary, Mass and reception not to exclude the messages left here and the funeral home website. James had the toughness of his wonderful Dad the compassion and love of life from his beautiful Mom. He has been called home by the Father Almighty and rest assured his Dad, Mom, brother, relatives and all the Loma Park and Holy Cross family were in wait at the purly gates. God Bless. Squeak.

My heart and soul goes out to James and his family for their loss. I worked with James for over 30 years with the company. My first meeting with him was in the early 80's when I was employed as a part-time seasonal driver out of the old UPS Alamo Heights Center. At that time he was a Supervisor there who worked successively on all shifts of the operation. He was there for the drivers in the morning during our Pre-load operation before we left the building, there during the day as an On-Car Supervisor who supported not only the center operation but also helped customers, and then again in the evening at our Un-load operation when the packages were brought back in for processing. He worked his way up in the company serving in various managerial positions throughout the district. I believe he found his ultimate position at our San Antonio Gateway where he could serve an even larger number of individuals which not only included our customers but also everyone that was involved in servicing our customers which affected thousands of people on a daily basis. He was always there to support everyone's success whenever needed. He was especially customer minded and would always go above and beyond to provide excellent service. He stood out as a very warm and friendly individual and manager that would always be positive and supportive even under the most demanding and stressful challenges that were presented. He was a great friend to have and I will truly miss him. Tim Grona
