Simon Zeitlin Obituary

ZEITLIN
Dr. Simon Pierre Zeitlin of San Antonio passed away August 28, 2012, at the age of 99. Born March 24, 1913, on a train in Latvia to French parents, Bernard Pierre and Rachel Zeitlin, he grew up in Charleville, Alsace-Lorraine, France. He began medical school at the University of Paris, then served in the Medical Corps of the French Army during World War II until he was captured by German soldiers and spent time in a prisoner of war camp in Spain. He managed to escape, and walked over the Pyrenees Mountains from Spain to France. He was able to complete his medical studies in France at the University of Montpellier and received his M.D. in 1942. He came to the United States that same year, and received his license to practice medicine in New York in 1945. He also practiced medicine in West Virginia and Maryland. He then moved to San Antonio where he became a U.S. citizen and was a resident physician at the Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital. Dr. Zeitlin opened a medical practice at 6500 S. Flores St. in the late 1940s. He was past-president of the Bexar County Medical Society and had hospital privileges at the Baptist Medical Center. He retired in 1996. He is survived by his son's family, Dr. Michael P. Zeitlin, Cheryl Zeitlin and their son, Lucas, and by his daughter's family, Paulette J. Mallard and her sons, James and Paul, whose father was the late Jim Mallard, all of San Antonio, as well as many nieces and nephews and friends, and four-legged friends, too. A memorial service is planned at 1 p.m. Friday, September 7, at the Church of Reconciliation, 8900 Starcrest Drive.

Paulette and Michael,
I called Girly this morning to tell her I had a dream about your Dad, and she told me that he had passed a few months back. I did not know, I am so sorry. He was always so funny and had so many stories. All the times that we had when you had the ranch in Quihi. Good times and Good memories.
God Bless all of you...

Our sincere condolences, Linda Glover Shoemaker, Christine Glover Aaron, and Justin Glover - he was our family dr., 1967 thru early 90's. We didn't get to tell him "thank you" for all the years he cared for us. A very compassionate man.

I personally did not know the doctor but i know his grandson Paul who often spoke very highly of his grandfather. I am sorry I never met him and sincere condolences to the family.

S.P. as I called him became my doctor hen I was 7 months old and I remained with him until he retired. He took care of my Grandmother, Mom and Dad, Sister and was able to fulfill my sisters wish of becoming a Mother when he arranged the adoption of their first son. I was given the opportunity to reunite with him a couple of years ago, when I started delivering Meals on Wheels after I retired. What a surprise when he opened the door and saw me there.....we hugged and kissed and shared stories.....his sense of humor was still there! I was able to meet one of his Grandsons in HEB not too long ago with him and gave him a hard time about being too slow! You and your family are in my prayers.

Beloved father and grandfather. A true patriarch to his family. He will be forever loved and missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. I count myself as one who is so blessed. Rest in Peace, "Grandpa" (as I called him).

What can I say but how sorry I am for such a great loss. This man delivered me in 1950 and I went to him until he retired,as well as my whole famly and their families. He saved my mother's life and she just turned 90 years old. We all loved him and respected him. He had such a good sense of humor. You were all so blessed to have him for so many years, and because of him We too are blessed because we still have my mother. He always knew me after he retired when I would see him at the post office on Broadway, and other places. Again you all are in my heart and prayers. Donnna Richter Brodman and the whole Richter family.

Dr. Zeitlin was much loved. We have gone to many doctors in the years since he retired, in San Antonio and in Corpus Christi, but our "family doctor" has never been replaced in our hearts.
