Dr. George H. Thompson, 73, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 21, 2014 in Aventura, Florida after battling cancer for four years. He was born on February 9, 1941 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the second of five children to George H. and Mary Agnes Thompson. He developed his love for San Antonio during his teenage years when enrolled at the city's Assumption Seminary. Dr. Thompson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois in 1965. He continued his education earning the Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Oklahoma City University in 1967 and the Ph.D. from Michigan State University, East Lansing in 1970. His studies and research focused on secondary education, educational psychology, and English language and linguistics. He also did post-doctoral study in counseling and guidance at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and was awarded a school administration certificate by Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.

Dr. Thompson was a respected teacher, administrator and counselor at San Antonio's Central Catholic High School serving there from 1982 to1988 and again from 1992 to 1998. He taught English, Latin, and journalism; was the assistant principal for academics; and took particular pride in developing the guidance program's focus on assisting students with regard to their selection of colleges and universities as well as securing scholarships. From 1988-1992 he served as principal at San Antonio's St. Luke's Catholic School. Other Texas educational employment on Dr. Thompson's resume includes continuing education at Trinity University in San Antonio; training and development for the Texas Department on Aging in Austin; and televised Latin instruction for Starnet, a program of Education Service Center Region XX in San Antonio. After moving to Miami, Florida in 2001 he taught Latin at the Gulliver Schools and, as an adjunct professor, at the University of Miami.

Dr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Anne. He is survived by three sisters Jane Thompson, Georgetown, Texas; Mary Jo Casey, Pacific, Missouri; Betsy Brogan, Mustang, Oklahoma and his partner of 41 years Craig Likness, Miami, Florida.
