NICHOLS
Our beloved Al (Albert) Payton Nichols (Colonel Ret.) passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at his home. Al was born in Morganfield, Kentucky on the 14th of April, 1935 to Mary Francis and R.C. Nichols. He grew up in Elkton, Kentucky and graduated from Columbia Military Academy and proceeded to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He later graduated from Oklahoma State University. His desire to become a United States Air Force pilot took him away from school and into the wild blue yonder. During his tour in Southeast Asia he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. A veteran of 175 missions, he received the first through tenth oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal and The Distinguish Service Cross. The family traveled through many assignments and came back home to San Antonio where he retired. The following week he began another career with Lear Siegler Aircraft for twenty years with friends and colleagues at Randolph AFB, Texas. He is preceded in death by his son, Tom; father; mother; brother, Jim; and sister, Jean. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Diane Van Cleave Nichols; daughter, Linda; grandson, Karl; and many nieces and nephews. Al was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
