VILLARREAL
Albert "Bird" Villarreal age 66, of San Antonio, TX. went to heaven on May 1, 2013, to join his parents, Alfonso and Jesusa Villarreal and his granddaughter, Audrianna Villarreal. He was surrounded by his family at home. Albert is survived by his wife, Emma L. Villarreal; his sons, Albert and Arthur; his daughters, Liza and Evette; his sons- in-laws, Rafael and Wayne; his daughters-in-law, Isabel and Rachel; his grandchildren, Albert Joseph, Justin, Ryan, Tommy, Miranda, and Audrianna. To his family and friends, Albert was known as "Bird" and "Coach Bird". In his youth, Bird was voted "MVP", "All-City" "All-District" & "All -State" in the Men's Basketball league. Averaging 28.8 points a game in league play as a senior, Jersey # 31. Bird went to SAC for a year and a half before being drafted by the Army. Albert proudly served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1973. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam War Veteran. Albert worked for the San Antonio Parks & Recreation as a coach for 30 years; and retired as a coach for South San ISD after 20 years. He also enjoyed volunteering his time for basketball and baseball youth leagues. Bird was recognized as one of the city's outstanding youth basketball instructor. He was an NYSCA lifetime member. Bird earned 15 MVP awards in Latin American Tournaments throughout the State in his career. Bird was inducted in the Latinos in Action Hall of Fame. Bird enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events. He never missed a Spurs game, and he was a lifelong Dodgers fan. Albert "Bird" Villarreal will forever live in our memories and in our hearts. Visitation will begin, Monday, May 6, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at the Delgado Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral procession will depart on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 9:00 am for a 9:30 a.m. mass at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. The burial will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
