CRANE Edward "Ed" Wiliams Crane, 95, died Saturday, January 12, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas. Ed was born May 25, 1917. His father, Hyrum Crane, was a Union Pacific Railroad Engineer. His mother, Margaret Ann Williams Crane, a homemaker, had six daughters and three sons. Ed was the eighth child. Ed married Frances Venita Dice on October 18, 1937. They had three children: Edward "Ted" Robert Crane, Dianne Kathleen Crane Sweeney and Steven Roger Crane. His children are married to Karin Fredericks Crane, Michael Kay Sweeney and Ann Robertson Crane. Ed had four grandchildren: Julie Larkin, Shelley Anderson, Todd Crane and Edie Reardon. He had eleven great grandchildren: Madeline, Jack and Teddy Larkin; Tate, Brady, Quinn, Phoebe, and Cooper Anderson; Ryan and Scott Crane; and Caleb Hunsperger. He also had numerous great grandchildren. In 1993, Ed married Dorothy Long Livesay of Beaumont, Texas. Her children were devoted to Ed. In fact, Dottie's daughter, Cynthia, introduced them. They are Cynthia and Larry Shiflet of Houston and children Wilson Calvert and Olivia Calvert; Heather Livesay, of Austin, and children Reid Gieseke and Eliza Gieseke; and Alicia and Todd Pirtle, of Austin, and children Quinn Pirtle, Thomas Pirtle and Julia Pirtle. Also, Ed considered longtime caregivers Laura and Polo Garza his children. Ed Crane was a grocery man. He often said that he loved every day of his career. He began as a boy working at Safeway in Twin Falls, Idaho. Soon after, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Seaman First Class. During the 1950's, Ed joined Albertson's at their seventh store. Ed proceeded to open 150 Albertson's stores in five regions. In 1969, Ed joined HEB Grocery Company. He was instrumental in the phenomenal growth to this company. He retired from HEB in 1982 as Vice President of Store Operations. Ed was always a lively person. He enjoyed golf, dancing, hunting, and singing. He liked sharing stories of good events. Ed always became a part of the community in the cities he called home. He was past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club and past president of the Rotary Club in Twin Falls, Idaho. He continued his service in the Downtown Rotary Club of San Antonio. He supported the San Antonio Symphony and was a past president of the HEB Senior Partners. He was also a member of Oak Hills Country Club and the St. Anthony Majestic Club. Ed was an Elder and a Deacon of First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio. He was a leader but his greatest gift was his love of family, friends and associates. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 from 5 -7 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough. SERVICE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2013 11:00 A.M. A reception to follow in Westminster Hall of First Presbyterian Church. A procession will follow to Sunset Memorial park for the interment.
