Elizabeth Riley Obituary

RILEY
Elizabeth (Betty) Quinn Riley was born in Rochester, New York on August 23, 1922. At age one, her family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where she grew up. A resident of San Antonio, Texas since 1948, she died peacefully and naturally on July 14, 2011 while drinking her morning coffee and planning the menu for her next bridge party. The rock of her family and a beacon of love, she was an inspiration to all who basked in the shining light of her enduring presence. Widowed at age 40, Betty returned to school to obtain a masters degree in library science and thereafter embarked on a long career at the St. Mary's University library. "Retirement" in 1988 only led to more bridge, more volunteer work, a stint as a librarian at Palo Alto College, and another long career as the head archivist and crossword puzzle guru at her son's law practice. She announced her impending retirement from that vocation just a day before she died. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. Riley, son, Francis Quinn Riley, and two brothers, Charles A. Quinn, Jr., of St. Louis, Missouri, and William F. Quinn, former Governor of Hawaii. She is survived by five children, Louise Cooper, Mary Wechtenhiser (Richard), Darby Riley (Chris), Betsy Rapkin (Steve), and Frances Riley; daughter-in-law Mary Killenberg Riley; sixteen grandchildren, Molly Riley Towns, Libby Wechtenhiser, Josie Quinn McKain, Jennifer Riley Stone, William Wechtenhiser, Gene Sanchez, Charles Riley, Betsy Riley, Mae Sanchez Cella, Katie Riley Kerr, Martin Riley, Sam Cooper, Daniel Riley, Sarah Quinn Cooper, Paul Riley Schoffer, Grace Riley and by four great grandsons and three great granddaughters, and she was eagerly awaiting the arrival of two more great grandchildren.

If we'd known about her funeral in time, we'd have been there for sure. Your mother was one of the world's most special people. Just being around her was like getting a hug.

You have our deepest sympathies.

Betsy,
My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. Just remember that God is in charge and Peace has now taken hold. Hold on to God's Hand and He will guide you through this trying time. I have never forgotten what you once shared with me; get in God's cupped Hands and let Him hold you. This is now the time to place the love of your family in to God's cupped Hands and let Him guide you through your sorrow. May Betty Rest in Peace and God Bless her for her dynamic work in raising her family to be the beautiful people that God created through her. God Bless! Debbie Southwell (San Antonio)

We want to extend our sincere condolences to all of Betty's family at this time. The Galloway family grew up with the Riley family. Ruth Ann played bridge with Betty and her kids shared the same classrooms with us at St. Paul's. I will always remember Betty's happy disposition, even during trials, and now she'll be sharing that smiling attitude in Heaven!

Riley family, We were suprised to hear Betty's name mentioned in prayers for the deceased for the week. I quickly checked the paper first. We are so sorry to hear this. I've known her from Cathoic Scripture Study at St. Luke about 1996. God bless all of you.

I know words are small comfort at a time like this. Try to find solace in how fully she lived, deeply she loved, and that the light she brought to this world shines in all of you. it was a privilege to have known her.
